Thursday in Kelowna was about momentum. We opened with the President's welcome and our annual Awards, taking a moment to recognize the local government finance professionals whose work holds BC communities together.

Then keynote speaker Steve Foran took the stage with Gratitude at Work: Building Resilience Together β€” a reminder that resilience isn't built only in budgets and asset plans, but in the teams and relationships behind them. Equal parts energizing and practical.

From there, delegates moved through concurrent sessions addressing the real pressures finance teams face right now: risk-based budgeting, delivering capital projects, and shifting from reactive recovery to proactive resilience.

But the part you can't fit on a schedule? The hallway conversations. The questions at the mic. Reconnecting with peers from across the province who understand exactly what your week looks like.

We closed the day among the vineyards at 50th Parallel Estate Winery for our Gala Evening β€” good food, great company, and a well-earned toast to the work ahead.

One more day to go. πŸ‘

As Day 2 of the 2026 GFOA of BC Annual Conference gets underway in Kelowna, a quick look back at a full Day 1, both in person and online.

The day got to the heart of this year's theme, Building Resilient Communities, by examining the housing and infrastructure pressures facing BC local governments and the tools to plan for what's ahead β€” including a look at how digital twins could reshape capital planning.

Add strong panels, candid Q&A from the floor, and a busy tradeshow floor, and it was a full day of peer learning that defines this community.

Great to see so many of you working through the tough questions together, and there's more ahead today.

We're underway! πŸŽ‰ Day 1 of the 2026 GFOA of BC Annual Conference has arrived in beautiful Kelowna.

We kicked things off last night on the waterfront at King Taps β€” pre-conference workshops wrapped up, old colleagues reconnected, and many new faces joined the BC local government finance community for the first time.

Those connections aren't just a nice evening out. They're the working relationships that make the year easier β€” the people you call when a reserves question, a tax sale, or a major infrastructure decision lands on your desk.

Now, the main program begins, centered on this year's theme: Building Resilient Communities: Housing & Infrastructure.

Follow along over the next few days. Welcome, everyone β€” let's make it a great one.

Clean drinking water. Safe streets. Parks and public health. The everyday things a community relies on.

That is where finance professionals from local governments across BC began the week in Kelowna. Not with spreadsheets, but with a broader question: why does local government exist, and how can it better serve communities?

The answers came back to purpose. Local government delivers the services that make a place livable and helps a community tackle the hard problems it chooses to solve together. Behind it all lies the quieter work that keeps those services reliable: sound budgets and careful, long-term planning.

This week is about doing that work better. Three days of comparing what works and what doesn't, and of planning for an uncertain future.

The main GFOA of BC conference begins on Wednesday. We will share what we learn as we go.

The most stressful week of your year just wrapped. The next thing on the calendar? A session about happiness.

The timing wasn't planned, but it landed. This week, our community gathered for the first-ever GFOABC Spotlight Series β€” on gratitude at work. A real reset after the May 15 deadline.

Three ideas stuck with us: create intentional space for connection, support people in helping others, and bring people together in person because some conversations only happen face-to-face.

Which is exactly what next week is for.

The 2026 Annual Conference runs May 27–29 in Kelowna: three days of sessions, shared problems, hard-won solutions, and the colleagues who just get it. After a season of deadlines, this is where finance professionals from local governments across BC reconnect.

Safe travels, everyone. See you next week.

To what extent is your tangible capital asset (TCA) data used to inform asset management and financial decision-making within your organization?

That's the question we're posing to BC's local government finance community ahead of our July 9 Spotlight Session with PSD Citywide: how strategically is your TCA data used? A primary input into AM and capital planning? An occasional reference? Compliance only?

On Asset Management Day β€” sitting at the centre of Union of BC Municipalities' Local Government Awareness Week β€” this is exactly the right question. Financial resiliency depends on the link between the data we collect and the decisions we make based on it.

Local Government Awareness Week starts today β€” and this year's
Union of BC Municipalities theme, Financial Resiliency, points squarely to the work our members do every day.

Behind every balanced budget, every funded reserve, every long-term financial plan, and every asset management decision β€” there's a finance officer thinking ten, twenty, or fifty years ahead.

Financial resiliency isn't an event. It's the everyday discipline of planning for your community's needs long after today's pressures pass.

To the 1,400+ finance professionals across BC: thank you for the work you do, often quietly, that keeps your communities prepared for what's next.

This year's Local Government Awareness Week theme couldn't be more relevant to our community.

From Sunday, May 10, through May 16, Union of BC Municipalities is asking local governments across BC to share how they're building Financial Resiliency β€” the ability to anticipate, absorb, and adapt to financial volatility while continuing to deliver essential services.

That's the work underway in finance offices every day: long-term planning, reserves, capital strategy, and asset stewardship.

We'll be sharing stories and resources from across the GFOA of BC community throughout the week β€” including a closer look at Asset Management Day on Wednesday, May 13.

On May 19, Steve Foran joins us for The Happiness Dividend β€” the inaugural session of the GFOA of BC Spotlight Series.

The UN World Happiness Report, co-founded by UBC Professor Emeritus John Helliwell right here in BC, has measured what makes people thrive across 150+ countries since 2012. The findings point to something local government leaders already sense: happiness at work comes down to trust, genuine connection, and the everyday habits of gratitude that most workplaces overlook.

In this 90-minute session, Steve β€” founder of Gratitude at Work and GFOABC's 2026 conference keynote β€” translates the report's global insights into seven actionable strategies to boost team engagement and build organizational resilience.

Think of it as a preview of what Steve will bring to the conference stage in Kelowna later that month.
