A Taste of Home, Built by the Mines!
Ask anyone who ever left Bell Island what they miss most, and somewhere near the top, every single time, you'll find the same answer "Sunday Dinner".
Not the ferry, not the mines, not even the view across Conception Bay.
A plate of roast beef, potatoes, vegetables, peas pudding, all smothered in gravy, (some even with a slice of bread to mop up every last drop)
But on Bell Island, Sunday Dinner was never just a meal. For generations of mining families, it was the reward at the end of a hard week underground. It was fathers, grandfathers, brothers, & sons gathering around the table after long shifts in the iron ore mines. It was where stories were shared, laughter echoed through the kitchen, & families reconnected before another work week began.
The mines put food on the table, but 'Sunday Dinner" brought everyone to it.
Today, when Bell Islanders living away think of home, they often remember that table just as much as the mines themselves.
Because sometimes the strongest memories of our mining heritage aren't found underground, they're found around the family dinner table.
