International Firefighters’ Day was born from both tragedy and unity.

On December 2, 1998, during a wildfire in Linton, Australia, five firefighters tragically lost their lives.

In the days that followed, a call went out across the world—
to create a day where firefighters everywhere could be honoured, remembered, and recognised.

May 4 was chosen as a global day of respect.
A day that now unites communities across nations and generations.

From loss came legacy.
From legacy came a global movement.

The Alberta RCMP is asking motorists to use extra caution on provincial highways during a province-wide highway cleanup taking place this Saturday, May 2, 2026, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This cleanup involves over 12,000 participants, including 8,000 youth from 4‑H Clubs, Junior Forest Wardens, and other youth groups. Participants will be wearing safety vests, and caution signs will be posted near cleanup areas.

Please slow down in marked areas and watch for increased foot traffic. Extra RCMP patrols will be out to help keep everyone safe and reduce speeding.

If weather doesn’t cooperate, the alternate date is May 9, 2026.

Thanks for doing your part to keep Alberta’s highways safe!

Volunteer Week is a time to recognize the people who quietly hold our communities together—and here in Alberta, volunteer firefighters are among the very best of them.

Across rural towns and small communities, these men and women answer the call at all hours. They leave family dinners, jobs, and sleep behind to respond to emergencies—whether it’s a fire, a collision, or a neighbor in need. They train silently, show up consistently, and serve without expectation of recognition or reward.

Volunteer firefighters aren’t just first responders—they’re community builders. They coach our kids, support local events, and stand ready when things go wrong. Their commitment keeps our communities safe, especially in areas where full-time emergency services may be limited.

During National Volunteer Week, we take a moment to say thank you. Your courage, sacrifice, and dedication do not go unnoticed. You are the backbone of our towns—and we are deeply grateful.
