🚲 Bicycle Safety & Awareness in Wasaga Beach 🚲

It’s important to remember that bicycles are considered vehicles under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act and cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists. By following the rules of the road, cyclists help create safer streets for everyone and promote positive relationships between all road users.

Here are a few important bicycle safety reminders:
✅ Obey all traffic laws, signs, and signals
✅ Always ride in the same direction as traffic
✅ Ride in a straight line and avoid weaving around obstacles
✅ Stay about one metre from the curb or parked cars to avoid hazards
✅ Use proper hand signals for turns and stops
✅ Ride single file when being passed
✅ Yield to pedestrians and warn others before passing with a bell or friendly greeting
✅ Wear bright clothing and use reflectors and lights in low-light conditions
✅ Stay out of motorists’ blind spots, especially near large trucks
✅ Make eye contact with drivers to ensure they see you
✅ A friendly wave to motorists who pass safely goes a long way! 👋
✅ Cyclists are not permitted to ride on sidewalks. Children under 10 may ride on sidewalks until they develop the skills to safely ride on the road with traffic.

Remember — bicycles can ride on most roads, bicycle lanes, cycling routes, and multi-use trails, but cannot ride on sidewalks, within crosswalks or pedestrian crossovers. Motorists are reminded to share the road safely, give cyclists enough space when passing, and stay alert for vulnerable road users.

Let’s all do our part to keep Wasaga Beach roads safe and enjoyable for everyone this season! ☀️🚴
