📢 New project posted to the Canadian Impact Assessment Registry

Parks Canada is sharing information about the Deep Bay Parking & Pedestrian Access Project in Riding Mountain National Park.

The project is being proposed to help improve visitor safety and access during busy times when the Deep Bay area can become crowded with vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians.

The proposed project includes: ✅ Building a new gravel parking lot south of TaWaPit Drive with space for 38 vehicles
✅ Creating a pedestrian walkway and road crossing to the Deep Bay area
✅ Improving safety for visitors walking and cycling in the area
✅ Closing a section of Wasagaming Drive to vehicles after construction, while keeping it open for pedestrians and cyclists

The Canadian Impact Assessment Registry is an online tool where Canadians can:
• Learn about projects on federal lands
• Follow project updates
• Take part in public comment periods
• View project documents and information
• Sign up for project notifications

Parks Canada is inviting public comments until September 19, 2026.

Trail Maintenance Notice: Lakeshore Trail

Maintenance work is taking place along the Lakeshore Trail between Deep Bay and the Golf Course.

Crews will use a tractor and mower to cut back plants and brush along the trail. In some areas, work may also be done to restore the ditch beside the trail. This work will help improve sightlines, make the trail safer, and support future maintenance.

Flaggers will be on site to assist pedestrians and cyclists and help maintain safe passage through the work area. We will do our best to keep the trail open, but you may experience short delays while the work is underway. "Work Ahead" signs will be posted at both ends of the work area.

Western Tiger Salamanders

In late summer, these slimy friends emerge from their aquatic breeding sites and begin their search to find the perfect terrestrial overwintering spot. This great migration is sometimes up to a kilometre. For the Western Tiger Salamanders (Ambystoma mavortium), that is a VERY long journey.
Western Tiger Salamanders are a special sight to see in RMNP. They mean the environment is doing well. The amphibians have very permeable bodies, so toxins in the environment are very harmful for them. Healthy salamanders = healthy ecosystem.

In spring, Western Tiger Salamanders lay their eggs in water, so come late summer the larvae are ready to metamorphisis and transform into their adult phase. The young adults then set off overland in search of burrows or soft substrate where they can overwinter. In the process, though, they might have to cross dangerous obstacles like a road, where sadly salamanders are killed each year throughout their range. To help mitigate this, in RMNP the curbs at the Southgate of Highway 10 have been modified for easier crossing, and there are signs put up during their great migration to remind vehicles to slow down.

During “The Great Salamander Migration of 26’” lets pay close attention to our slimy friends seeking refuge across the roads. Often the small and rarely seen critters in our park don’t get the love they deserve. But not this year! 🥂🦎

Do you love spending time outdoors and want to give back to Riding Mountain National Park? Join the Friends of Riding Mountain Trail Stewards and help keep RMNP's trail network in great shape for everyone to enjoy!

No experience is necessary. Whether you can join for one morning or both days, we welcome all volunteers. All you need is:

Trail maintenance is especially important this year as we prepare to host the Epic East Gate Trail Run on September 12, 2026. Featuring 10 km, 25 km, and 50 km categories. Epic East Gate is the only ultra and trail running event held within Riding Mountain National Park. Over $40,000 in proceeds raised provide support to regional healthy living initiatives through the Dauphin Rotary Club.

Earlier this summer Trail Steward volunteers cleared portions of the North Shore Trail ahead of the Mennonite Central Committee’s - Cycling Clear Lake event which raised nearly $60,000 towards providing clean drinking water in West Bengal India.

🦟 We hear the buzz🦟

This year's weather has been perfect for mosquitoes. Lots of rain, standing water, and warm, humid days have helped mosquito numbers grow.

Did you know? Mosquito eggs can survive dry conditions for up to 8 months and hatch when the weather becomes favourable.

Parks Canada does not spray for mosquitoes because it can harm other insects and wildlife that are important to the ecosystem. Mosquitoes are a natural part of the park and are a food source for many species.

Planning a visit? Come prepared:
✔️ Bring bug spray (it might be sold out in town!)
✔️ Wear light-coloured, long-sleeved clothing
✔️ Avoid dark colours
✔️ Use bug nets when needed
✔️ Choose breezy areas when possible
✔️ Pack anti-itch products
✔️ Remove standing water around your campsite

The mosquitoes may be sticking around, but they don't have to ruin your day. A little preparation can go a long way toward enjoying your favourite park activities! ☀️🏖️🚣

🛟 TRAINING FOR THE MOMENTS THAT MATTER MOST

Every second counts when someone unexpectedly ends up in the water.

This past week, our Resource Conservation team took part in person overboard training, practicing how to respond quickly and safely in an emergency.

Regular training helps staff stay prepared, build confidence, and keep critical rescue skills sharp. While we hope these techniques never need to be used in a real-life situation, being ready is an important part of keeping visitors, staff, and our waterways safe.

You can help stay safe on the water by:
✅ Wearing a personal flotation device
✅ Keeping a close eye on children
✅ Making safe decisions on and around the water

Thankfully, this training scenario ended with smiles and a successful rescue. But the skills behind it are no joke. 💙🛟

🏊🚴🏃 A quick triathlon reminder

The Riding Mountain Triathlon is taking place today in Wasagaming.

If you're travelling through Riding Mountain National Park, expect some temporary traffic disruptions and reduced speed zones along parts of the race route. Please watch for cyclists and runners and follow directions from event volunteers.
