Hey! I’m Matthew (he/him), and I’m running to be your next VP Operations & Finance! A bit about me—I study CS and Math here at Waterloo, and I study Business Administration up the street at Laurier. I tend to run around in the ridiculous outback hat you can see above, and rest assured that I’ve continued to don it through the pandemic and will continue to once we’re back on campus 🤠.

I started my story of student involvement at MathSoc, first as VP Academic, a business councillor, and a director and then finally as President this past Fall. At MathSoc I learned so much about how a student society functions, and what needs to be done to make them succeed. At WUSA, I’ve served as a student councillor and member of the budget & appropriations committee. Outside of WUSA, I currently serve as your student representative on the City of Waterloo Economic Development Advisory Committee.

I’m so thankful for all these chances to get involved and upgrade my knowledge of how these kinds of organisations work, and I’m so excited to apply that knowledge, and my mathematics and business knowledge, to make better than ever before.

As your VP Operations & Finance, I will make the following my priority:
- Return the core principle of value-for-student-money to WUSA decision-making.
- Actively build greater transparency and accountability across WUSA through proactive public reporting and communications directly from me.
- Be there for students, though the pandemic and beyond—including a 24-hour response time to all student inquiries.
- Get campus ready for your return, and not at any additional cost.

Heyo! My name is Steph (she/they), and I'm running to be your next VP Education 🎓

No one said university would be easy, and there’s certainly no shortage of difficulties we regularly encounter as students. Toxic work environments, bone-crushing student debt, ineffectual mental health supports- these are just a few of the unpleasant issues that complicate student life.

Like Catherine and Ben, I've been involved in student governance for quite some time now. It started out as a way of keeping myself distracted, but somewhere along the way- meeting all these students spearheading these wildly creative initiatives, speaking to these incredibly pertinent issues- you fall in love with it.

And, as corny as it sounds, at some point you begin realizing that a single person can have a massive impact. (Frankly, it still blows my mind).

As VP-Education, my hope is to accomplish the following:

→ Advocate for accountable and equitable online learning
→ Work the university, provincial government, and other stakeholders to develop supports to students left in precarious positions as a result of pandemic
→ Address the concerns identified in the Student Accessibility Commission's report with regards to disability supports on campus

But beyond that, I want to help others in leaving their own mark on this institution.

Hi all! My name is Catherine (she/they), and I'm running to be your next VP Student Life 😄

(I'm also looking to renew my seat as your Math Senator, so I'd love your vote there as well!!)

My biggest three goals as VPSL are:
→ Integrating sustainability & equity into every branch of the organisation,
→ Investing in support, guidance, and resources for student groups, and
→ Working with services to create long-range action plans to set clear direction for coming years.

I’ve been involved with student governance since my 1A term here at UW, and I’m excited to give back to an organisation that’s given so much to me throughout my time here. The student life portfolio means a lot to me—orientation, acapella, and the second-hand clothing store have been big parts of what’s made my time here special, and I want to make sure there’s space for everyone to feel at home on campus.

Hey everyone!

My name is Ben, I use he/him pronouns, and I’m in 4B Economics with a French Minor. In my 5 years at Waterloo and 4 years with WUSA, I’ve been lucky to serve students as a representative, as an advocate, and as a Director. This breadth of experience is why I’m running to be your WUSA President.

I first became involved with WUSA as a Student Councilor in May 2017 following my 1B term. As a Councilor, I sat on the inaugural Education Advisory Committee, which introduced me to the political advocacy that is integral to our student association.

This introduction to advocacy inspired me to work as the Municipal Affairs Commissioner in 2018-19. In this role I worked closely with the VP-Education to advocate on local issues like safe pedestrian crossings on University Ave, and ran an educational campaign for students on the Ontario Standard Lease.

With the Ford government’s passage of the Student Choice Initiative in early 2019, the future of our student association was uncertain. I decided that the best place to serve WUSA was on the Board of Directors, where I have had a seat since May 2019. Working as the Secretary of the Corporation in my first term, and Chair of the Board currently has made me intimately familiar with the governance issues our organization faces to continue operating each year.

Needless to say, 4 years of student politicking has flown by. I am running for President today because I feel an obligation to “pay it forward” to the student association that has given me countless opportunities to grow as an individual, and I want to help shape an organization that continues to serve students in this way. That’s why my year in office will focus on:
- Governance reform that makes WUSA more accessible for every member
- Advocating the creation of a University ombudsperson to support students with academic policy issues
- Holding the University to its commitments to divest from fossil fuels

Hello, World! We are Team 🦆🦆!

While each of us is entering this election from a different background, we agree on two things:

- Next year’s WUSA leadership must act to ensure a safe transition back-to-campus, aim to create a vibrant student community (whether on campus or online), while respecting student money

- Ducks are objectively the best bird
