Today was the official grand opening of Welland Fire Station #3 - The Captain Craig C. Bowman Memorial Station - on Prince Charles Drive.

We were honoured to be joined by Craig's family, as well as dignitaries including Mayor Campion and members of Council.

Captain Craig Bowman passed away in the line of duty from work related cancer. He was an active member of Welland Fire and Emergency Services at the time of his death. In true heroic, selfless, Craig Bowman fashion, he spent his final days fighting on behalf of firefighters across Ontario to ensure that the cancer risks associated with firefighting are properly recognized. His family continued to advocate for legislative reforms which included successfully promoting the passing of Ontario's Bill 127, which is a bipartisan bill known as The Captain Craig Bowman Act, which reduced the service-time requirement for presumptive coverage of esophageal cancer.

We are very pleased to ensure that Captain Bowman's legacy lives on and that his sacrifice will not be forgotten through the naming of the Captain Craig C. Bowman Memorial Station.

We'd like to thank the Mayor and Council for their support. We also want to thank Craig's family for their leadership in ensuring that other families of fallen heroes see their loved ones get recognized for their sacrifices.

On May 6, 1996, Drew Clements was a brand new firefighter with Welland Fire Department "eager to climb the fire ladder of success" (as the newspaper article said). 30 Years later, Drew has climbed that ladder and celebrates this milestone workiversary as Platoon Chief with Welland Fire and Emergency Services, a position he's held for the past 10 years.

Drew is an outstanding and respected leader within the department, and is currently the longest actively serving member of Welland Fire and Emergency Services. His dedication to serving the people of Welland is truly praiseworthy.

We'd like to congratulate Drew on 30 years with the City of Welland.

Thank you Drew for your selfless service, and steady leadership over the past 3 decades.

How could we possibly choose between an International Firefighter's Day post or a Star Wars Day Post? We couldn't so we went with BOTH.

May the 4th we ask which is cooler? The Millennium Falcon or Fire Truck Spaceship? Darth Vader or Sith Firefighter?

On International Firefighter's Day, we'd like to recognize the hard-work and dedication of both our career firefighters and our volunteer firefighters. 24/7, 365 days / year our crews are here to serve the City of Welland. We'd also like to recognize the selfless work of firefighters in our neighbouring communities and around the world.

Happy International Firefighter's Day and MAY THE 4th BE WITH YOU.

WATERSHED UPDATE: Additional rainfall of 20 to 30 mm is expected through the weekend. The combination of ongoing rain, elevated water levels, and saturated ground conditions may cause increases in water levels and could lead to minor localized flooding, particularly during heavy rainfall. Residents are urged to continue to use caution and stay away from rivers, creeks, and other waterbodies, as fast-flowing water and slippery banks can be dangerous. Property owners are encouraged to ensure that culverts, catch basins, and roadside ditches on or near their properties are clear of debris.

Welland Fire and Emergency Services is a flood warning update from the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA).

With 30-60 mm of rain expected through midweek, there is potential for localized flooding, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Smaller creeks and waterways in parts of Welland and across Niagara can rise quickly during heavy or sustained rainfall.

At this time, major flooding is not expected, but conditions can change depending on how much rain falls.

Residents are encouraged to:
-Stay back from rivers, creeks, and all waterbodies
-Use extra caution around slippery banks and fast-moving water
-Check that nearby catch basins and drains are clear of debris.

PROPERTY OWNER FINED FOR FIRE CODE VIOLATIONS AT 2 CITY OF WELLAND PROPERTIES.

Welland, ON – Welland Fire and Emergency Services (WFES) has concluded two Ontario Fire Code prosecutions involving residential properties in Welland.

The property owner was convicted in Provincial Offences Court after pleading guilty to multiple violations of the Fire Code. The charges stem from fire safety inspections conducted by WFES fire prevention staff at two properties owned by the same individual: 71 Young Street and 23 Welland Street. The court imposed fines totaling $120,000, plus court costs, and placed the owner on two years’ probation.

“Landlords have a legal responsibility to ensure their rental properties are maintained in compliance with the Fire Code,” said Matt Richardson, acting fire chief. “Conditions such as missing smoke alarms, inadequate fire protection systems, and unsafe building modifications place lives at risk. WFES will not tolerate properties being operated in a manner that endangers occupants or firefighters.”

WFES inspected 71 Young Street in July 2025 after receiving multiple fire safety complaints. The property includes a three-storey multi-residential building and a detached two-storey garage that had been converted into additional dwelling units. Officers identified several serious Fire Code violations, including missing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in the converted garage apartments, unsafe building modifications, and other life-safety concerns inside the main building.

In April 2025, WFES also inspected 23 Welland Street, a two-storey multi-residential building with a commercial unit on the ground floor. Officers identified multiple violations, including inadequate fire separations and a fire alarm system that was not maintained in working condition. The property owner had previously been charged in 2023 for failing to comply with an inspection order at this property.

WFES reminds property owners that compliance with the Ontario Fire Code is mandatory and essential to protecting the safety of residents, visitors, and emergency responders. The service continues to work proactively with property owners to promote fire safety and compliance through inspections, education, and enforcement when necessary.

Residents with concerns about fire safety in residential properties are encouraged to contact fire prevention staff at [email protected].

This week Welland Fire and Emergency Services' RESCUE 1 officially went into service with a "push-in ceremony" at WFES Headquarters.

Push-in ceremonies are a fire service tradition dating back to the 1800's, when apparatus were pulled by horses and had to be pushed into the station.

Rescue 1 is a highly capable and purpose built Heavy Rescue Unit that will be responding from our HQ on East Main Street. We are very pleased to have this new, important apparatus serving to protect our city.

We'd once again like to thank Mayor Campion and City Council for their continued support and commitment to to ensuring the safety of Welland's residents.
