Today was the official grand opening of Welland Fire Station #3 - The Captain Craig C. Bowman Memorial Station - on Prince Charles Drive.
We were honoured to be joined by Craig's family, as well as dignitaries including Mayor Campion and members of Council.
Captain Craig Bowman passed away in the line of duty from work related cancer. He was an active member of Welland Fire and Emergency Services at the time of his death. In true heroic, selfless, Craig Bowman fashion, he spent his final days fighting on behalf of firefighters across Ontario to ensure that the cancer risks associated with firefighting are properly recognized. His family continued to advocate for legislative reforms which included successfully promoting the passing of Ontario's Bill 127, which is a bipartisan bill known as The Captain Craig Bowman Act, which reduced the service-time requirement for presumptive coverage of esophageal cancer.
We are very pleased to ensure that Captain Bowman's legacy lives on and that his sacrifice will not be forgotten through the naming of the Captain Craig C. Bowman Memorial Station.
We'd like to thank the Mayor and Council for their support. We also want to thank Craig's family for their leadership in ensuring that other families of fallen heroes see their loved ones get recognized for their sacrifices.
