WEATHER ALERT - ORANGE LEVEL

Southern Ontario and the Golden Horseshoe Area (including Welland) are under an ORANGE level weather alert for severe thunderstorms that are tracking towards our area.

The main line of thunderstorms is expected to move through the region between 2:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., with the highest risk period from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Primary threats include:
-High winds up to 130 km/h
-Heavy downpours
-Large hail
-Frequent lightning
--Downed trees
-Damage to weakened structures/buildings
-Power outages

Significant rainfall is expected, creating the potential for flash flooding and water pooling in low-lying areas and on roadways.

There is also high confidence in tornado development, although the greatest risk is currently expected in the Grand Bend, London, and Kitchener areas.

Please remain vigilant, monitor conditions closely, and ensure you are prepared to respond to weather-related impacts as they develop. Stay alert and exercise caution throughout the afternoon and evening.

LINCOLN STREET DOCK FIRE DEPARTMENT ACCESS

Welland Fire and Emergency Services would like to advise residents and visitors of Welland that parking signs and pavement markings have been installed at the Lincoln Street Dock.

We're asking people to park exclusively in designated parking spaces so as to not obstruct areas that are marked as "no parking" zones. Firefighters require quick, unobstructed access to specific areas at the Lincoln Street Dock in order to respond to emergencies on the waterway. By respecting the signage and markings, you will be helping us maintain emergency staging and keep necessary rescue boat launch locations available.

We'd like to thank all users of and visitors to the Lincoln Street Docks for their understanding and cooperation. We'd also like to thank the various City of Welland departments and divisions that have helped facilitate these changes that will allow us to maintain our highly efficient water rescue response capabilities moving forward.

DOG RESCUE - Monday July 20th, 2026

Earlier this week, firefighters from Welland Fire and Emergency Services were called to a report of a dog who had fallen into an approximately 20ft deep cistern. The cistern was dry at the time, however the uninjured dog was trapped inside.

Firefighters from Niagara Falls Fire Department trained in confined space rescue were mobilized, however, Welland firefighters were able to secure the dog using a non-entry rescue technique prior to NFFD arriving on scene.

Welland Fire and Emergency Services would like to congratulate Captain Mark Michaud on his retirement following an incredible 38 years with the department.

Captain Michaud started with the City of Welland in 1988 as a "Stop 19" volunteer firefighter. He transitioned to a full-time firefighter with WFES in 2000.

Throughout his years of service, Mark earned the respect of his colleagues through his extensive knowledge, innovative thinking, and unwavering commitment to helping people. His inventive approach, operational expertise, and deep local knowledge have been invaluable assets to WFES.

Captain Michaud previously held the position of Acting Platoon Chief, and has served as a trustee with the Welland Professional Firefighter's Association.

We'd like to congratulate Mark on his retirement, and wish him all the best moving forward.

On Friday, July 17, 2026, Welland's new Pumper 3 was placed into service following a traditional "Push In Ceremony" at Welland Fire and Emergency Services' Stn.3 on Prince Charles Drive.

The tradition of a push in ceremony dates back to the 1800's when horse-drawn fire equipment had to be pushed back into the station after a call.

This video shows the push-in ceremony along with the official dispatch notification of the truck going into service. As an added bonus, we've also included a short video clip of the truck leaving the station to respond to it's first call.

We'd like to thank the mayor and council for there continued support and commitment to the safety of the citizens of Welland through the addition of this important new apparatus which will serve the community for years to come.

Welland Fire & Emergency Services would like to congratulate Captain Michel "Mike" Lavigne on his retirement which occurred on June 30, 2026.

Mike joined WFES in 2002 following careers in policing with Hamilton Police Service and the Niagara Regional Police. He also has a background in nursing.

One of Captain Lavigne's greatest strengths was his exceptional medical knowledge and calm, methodical approach to emergency patient care. His knowledge and willingness to share it has left a lasting impact on our department and on the many members who had the privilege of working alongside him.

His career reflects a lifetime devoted to helping others, first in policing and then the fire service.

We'd like to Wish Captain Lavigne all the best in retirement.

With wildfire smoke causing a significant impact on the air quality throughout Niagara, Welland Fire and Emergency Services reminds residents of Welland that all open air burning is prohibited while an air quality warning issued by Environment Canada is in effect.

All burn permits are temporarily suspended and backyard fires are not allowed until the air quality warning is lifted.

As of Wednesday, July 15th, 2026 Welland Fire and Emergency Services will be changing 9-1-1 dispatch providers. Our firefighters will now be dispatched by telecommunicators with St.Catharines Fire Department.

For members of the public: NOTHING CHANGES. This post is for information only.

For Fire Safety Plan Consultants: You will need to change the non-emergency contact information in the fire safety plans you prepare moving forward. Members of the public do NOT need this information. It is primarily for Fire Safety Plans that contain provisions for notifying dispatch when a fire alarm system test is being conducted.

For Fire Monitoring Companies: Please make note that the dispatch center you will be contacting when an alarm activation occurs in the City of Welland will now be St.Catharines Fire Department.

Welland Fire and Emergency Services is bringing the aerial fire truck to Ho**er Street Park for a refreshing afternoon of family fun.

From 1 to 3 p.m., firefighters will be spraying water from the aerial truck to help kids beat the summer heat.

Bring a towel, wear your swimsuit, and get ready to splash!

Please note: This event is weather-dependent and may be cancelled if firefighters are called to an emergency.
