MEDIA RELEASE | Youth voices lead conversation on Truth and Reconciliation in Welland

Earlier this week, Indigenous students from across Niagara gathered in Welland to share their perspectives on Truth and Reconciliation and discuss how communities, organizations, and institutions can move this work forward. Their voices, experiences, and ideas helped spark meaningful conversations about learning, understanding, and creating positive change at the local level.

The Youth Summit for Truth and Reconciliation was co-hosted by the City of Welland and the Welland Museum, with student feedback helping inform future learning opportunities, programming, and community dialogue.

COUNCIL MEETING HIGHLIGHTS | Missed the June 9 Council meeting? Here’s a quick look at some of the key decisions and discussions from the meeting.

Presentations:
Council head from presenters, including:
🔹 Cheryl Rowe, speaking about the importance of declaring a state of emergency related to mental health, homelessness, and addictions.
🔹 Jesse D’Hulster and Morena Bertholds from the Welland Downtown Business Improvement Area, presenting proposed updates to the organization’s constitution and a board appointment recommendation.

Staff reports:
🔹 Rotary Park washroom upgrade and relocation options referred
Council reviewed the report outlining options for addressing concerns about the existing washroom at Rotary Park, including accessibility improvements and potential relocation within the park. Options ranged from maintaining the current facility to replacing it with a new fully accessible washroom. Council referred the project to the 2027 Budget deliberations.
🔹 Dain City community space named
Council amended and then approved the report to name the new community space within South Welland Elementary School the Carrie Lynn Pinard Memorial Community Centre. The facility will replace the existing Carrie Lynn Pinard Memorial Centre and continue recognizing Carrie’s connection to Dain City and the Welland community. The decision preserves a meaningful local legacy while supporting a new, accessible gathering place for recreation, programs, and community events. The name applies only to the City’s dedicated community space within the school.
