What does it mean to have a seat at the table and who gets to make the rules?

Now on view at WVML, At the Table: The Architecture of Control by Canadian artist Jeannette Sirois explores the systems, institutions and structures that have shaped q***r and trans lives.

Through hand-drawn portraits, each accompanied by objects and words chosen by the sitter, the exhibition centres the people whose lives have often been defined by systems created without their full participation.

Tony Austin took this beautiful photograph of a dog outside the Dundarave Meat Market in West Vancouver, while on his early-morning paper route (circa 1955-65).

This photo, titled ‘Hounding the Meat Market Door’, won first place at the West Vancouver Memorial Library’s 75th anniversary community photo exhibit last year. It also went on to help solve a decades-old family mystery.

After seeing the photo, the dog’s former owner contacted Austin. For years, the family had wondered why they kept finding bones buried in their backyard. The answer was Sheba: she had apparently been a regular customer at the butcher shop.

For Austin, this is a perfect example of photography’s ability to preserve more than just an image; it can also reveal a story that might otherwise have been lost.

Beyond Stonewall: Canada’s Path to Decriminalization [HYBRID]

Many view the Stonewall Riots as the beginning of q***r activism, yet same-sex sexual activity was decriminalized in Canada one day prior on June 27, 1969. Despite this legal win, change was limited and 2SLGBTQAI+ communities continued to face criminalization, surveillance, discrimination, and violence.

Join researcher and curator Kaschelle Thiessen for an engaging and thought-provoking look at the complicated history behind Canada’s partial decriminalization via Omnibus Bill C-150, and how it shaped life in British Columbia in the years that followed.
