Wednesday we had the opportunity to sit down with high school students and ask questions that will help guide our priorities and shape our Education Plan moving forward.

I was incredibly impressed by how thoughtful, honest, and well-spoken these students were. They shared what was on their hearts and minds with confidence, maturity, and a clear desire to make their schools even better.

Student voice matters. When we listen carefully to the experiences, ideas, and concerns of our students, we are better equipped to make decisions that reflect what is actually happening in our schools.

Thank you to the students who took the time to speak with us today. Your insight was meaningful, and it will help inform the work ahead.

That day reminded me that our students are not just the future. They are thoughtful, capable voices in the present, and we are better when we take the time to listen.

We’re excited to share that our Division will be launching an online high school option for Grades 9–12, supported by Hāpara, with an official start planned for Summer School 2026. This program is designed to add flexibility for students and families—options could include full-time online, taking a few specific courses, or even learning online a few days per week, depending on what best supports a student’s success.

This is an additional pathway that keeps teachers at the centre of instruction while using tools that make online learning easier to manage and more effective. Hāpara helps support day-to-day online teaching by improving visibility into student engagement in a digital workspace, making it easier to guide students, share resources, and keep learning on track. At our recent Board discussions, trustees directed Administration to engage parents/guardians and the community to gauge interest in full-day, 5-days-a-week Kindergarten.

You’ll see surveys and other engagement opportunities coming soon. This feedback will help determine whether there’s enough interest to move forward with a pilot project in select schools.

The Alberta government has established a consistent system for school divisions to measure success and progress, known as the Accountability Pillar. This framework includes 16 performance measures that reflect how schools perform each year. The division uses these results to identify areas for improvement and to demonstrate progress through the Annual Education Results Report (AERR). The 2024-2025 AERR was presented to and approved by the Board. These results will inform revisions to the division’s three-year Education Plan in the spring, outlining updated priorities and actions for improvement. The attached is my message regarding this years AERR.
