Wetaskiwin Regional Public Schools Transportation Services has received an increasing number of reports from school bus drivers of motorists failing to stop for school buses displaying flashing red lights.

This dangerous behaviour places students at immediate risk of serious injury or death. Every school day, students cross roads, walk along shoulders, and approach or leave school buses. When a school bus activates its flashing red lights, children may be entering or crossing the roadway, and drivers must be prepared to stop.

IMPORTANT SCHOOL BUS SAFETY NOTICE TO ALL MOTORISTS - Protecting Students at School Bus Stops.

WRPS Transportation Services has received an increasing number of reports from school bus drivers of motorists failing to stop for school buses displaying flashing red lights.

This dangerous behavior places students at immediate risk of serious injury or death. Every school day, students cross roads, walk along shoulders, and approach or leave school buses. When a school bus activates its flashing red lights, children may be entering or crossing the roadway, and drivers must be prepared to stop.

Know the Law - Under Alberta's Rules of the Road, drivers approaching a stopped school bus displaying flashing red overhead lights must come to a complete stop and remain stopped until the red lights stop flashing or the bus begins moving again. This requirement applies to motorists approaching from either direction, unless the bus is on the opposite side of a divided highway.

Drivers should also watch for flashing amber lights, which indicate the bus is preparing to stop and students may soon be loading or unloading. Motorists should slow down and prepare to stop.
