Maleeha Shahid Regional Councillor - Whitby East Ward 4 Re-elect Maleeha Shahid for Regional Councillor - Whitby East Ward 4 | 📅 Vote Oct 22–25 | Oct 26, 2026 | Proud mom of 3 | Dedicated to our community

Yesterday at special council meeting, I wholeheartedly support the Hotel and Convention Centre initiative for Whitby.

The reality is that we cannot afford to keep waiting. Whitby continues to host major sporting events, lacrosse festivals, hockey tournaments and community celebrations, yet too often the athletes, families, visitors and organizations attending these events are staying and spending outside of Whitby.

The same is true for many of our major events. The Peter Perry Awards, large weddings, conferences, banquets and celebrations often have to leave Whitby because we simply do not have enough hotel rooms or large-scale event space. Royal Ashburn is a wonderful venue, but there is only so much one facility can accommodate.

Whitby has not seen a new hotel built in more than a decade. We need to actively attract this kind of development.

That is why I support creating a meaningful incentive, with a clear 18-month window, to demonstrate that Whitby is serious about attracting a hotel and convention centre.

This is not about helping a corporation. It is about building the infrastructure our growing community needs, supporting local businesses, keeping visitor spending in Whitby, creating jobs and making our town more welcoming and inclusive for major events.
Some may have a different opinion, and I respect that. That is what healthy public debate is about.

But my position is clear: I have supported investments that bring opportunity to Whitby, and I will continue to support initiatives that make Whitby more inviting, more competitive and a place where people can come, stay, celebrate and do business right here in our community.

It is time to bring more of these opportunities home to Whitby.

🍁 DID YOU KNOW?

Residents have been asking why maple trees are dropping their leaves early across Whitby. Many Norway Maples are showing signs of Tar Spot, a common fungal leaf disease.

The good news: early leaf drop does not necessarily mean the tree is dying.

🍂 Rake fallen leaves
💧 Water the root zone
🚫 Avoid watering leaves and branches

When I began writing Contradictions of Passion and Politics, it was shortly after the 2022 municipal election.

There was a lot happening around me, and I felt a need to put my thoughts on paper, not only to share my journey, but also to remind myself why I chose public service and why I continue to believe so strongly in municipal government and community.

It is also about my journey of embracing this beautiful country I am so proud to call home. Canada has shown me the kindness of neighbours, the importance of looking out for one another, and what is possible when people from different backgrounds come together with a shared commitment to their community.

No society is perfect. We should always be willing to acknowledge where we can do better. But we also have something incredibly special here. Communities built on kindness, compassion, opportunity, respect and people caring for one another.

That is worth protecting. That is worth preserving. And that is worth working for.

Those values are also at the heart of why I have been so proud to serve the residents of Whitby.

I’m sharing a video from my book launch and want to thank everyone who attended and helped make the book launch so meaningful and successful. Your support, conversations and encouragement meant so much to me. 💜

A special thank you to Tasha Kheiriddin for joining me for the fireside chat and for such a thoughtful and engaging conversation.

And thank you to everyone who has taken the time to read the book, share their thoughts with me, or simply encourage me along this journey.

I remain grateful for the opportunity to serve a community and a country I am proud to call home.

Saturday’s Super Canvassing Blitz was absolutely incredible! 💜

I can’t thank everyone enough for showing up, giving your time, and bringing so much energy to our campaign.

Together, we knocked on an amazing 5,500 doors across East Ward 4, in just one day!

This incredible accomplishment was only possible because of every volunteer who joined us. I am deeply grateful for your hard work, your support, and your belief in our campaign.

5,500 doors in one day, we did this together! 💜

Thank you!
