Whitehorse Firefighters Charitable Society

Whitehorse Firefighters Charitable Society A registered Charity made up of off duty professional firefighters in Whitehorse, Yukon. But we know that the need doesn’t end with the end of our shift.

Our focus is on helping families and children in need in our communities through our fundraising events, Firefighters Ball and the Share the Spirit Yukon program. As firefighters, we have dedicated our lives to helping people in their greatest time of need. The Whitehorse Firefighters Charitable Society, established in 2014 and comprised of the 31 professional members of the Whitehorse Firefighter

s Association, is driven by our desire to support our community not just in the crises of life but through the longer-term needs we see all around us, with a special focus on the children, youth and families of Whitehorse. As the Whitehorse Firefighters Charitable Society, we promise to show up to meet the needs of our community as best we can – on our off-hours, just as we do in our working hours.

None of what we do would be possible without the dedication, energy, and generosity of the volunteers who show up and make it happen. From our off-duty firefighters to our friends and supporters, every person who gives their time makes a difference.

A very special thank you goes to Landyn Blisner, who works tirelessly throughout much of the year behind the scenes to help bring this event together. Your commitment and hard work mean more than we can say!

Our premier sponsor this year was Gladiator Metals. We’ve worked hard to make this golf tournament not only a successful fundraiser for our programs, but also an exceptional event where golfers and volunteers can enjoy a wonderful experience. Thank you so much to Gladiator Metals for your generous support and for helping us make this event possible.

Special thanks to Alan Lebedoff with ALX Exploration Services. Their continued support as our title sponsorship is pivotal to the success we’ve been seeing with our annual fundraising golf tournament. Long time supporters Premier Currie Dixon with Minister joined us too for kick off too! Ted and Alan, while working for ALX, first approached us about this fundraising opportunity 4 years ago while volunteering for Share the spirit Yukon!

This week, two of our members…shout out to Jack Blisner and Ocean Stimson…are serving as camp counsellors at BC Professional Fire Fighters Burn Fund summer camp for children who have survived serious burn injuries and associated traumatic experiences from those injuries and recovery.

The camp is staffed primarily by firefighters, along with doctors, nurses, therapists, and other dedicated volunteers from across British Columbia and the Yukon. There is a long waiting list of union members hoping to volunteer, making it a tremendous honour to be selected. This year, we were especially proud to learn that a second member from our small northern local was chosen to attend.

With backgrounds in early childhood development and music, Jack and Ocean are uniquely suited to help these children build confidence, make lasting friendships, and simply enjoy being kids. Through outdoor adventures, creativity, laughter, and imagination, they help create a week where healing and fun go hand in hand.

Making this camp possible each year is truly a community effort. Our local, together with other IAFF locals and firefighter charitable organizations, helps raise the funds that ensure every child can attend at no cost to their family. This includes travel, accommodation, meals, and all camp activities for more than 70 children from communities across British Columbia and the Yukon. It costs approximately $3,000 to send one child to camp.

While Jack and Ocean are away volunteering, the rest of our union members, step up to cover their scheduled shifts. That means there is no additional cost to the City of Whitehorse, Yukon, and our members donate not only their time at camp, but also make sure our community continues to receive the same level of service at home while representing it away.

We couldn’t be prouder of Jack and Ocean for representing our local and making a difference in the lives of children who deserve a week filled with hope, friendship, and unforgettable memories.

If there are any families out there with children 8-18 who have suffered burns that are living in the Yukon or Atlin (or any other BC location on our border), feel free to reach out to us, regarding registration to attend this amazing healing event next year!
