18 Alsek Little Free Library turns 6!! I can’t imagine our front yard without this little box! For six great years, we have had a front row seat to watch neighbours reading and sharing books…and we look forward to many more years of watching children fling open the door of the LFL to find the next best read.

Right now for your reading pleasure…

American war by Omar El Akkad – A 2017 Globe and Mail best book about a polarized America descending into a second Civil War. Sarat Chestnut is an unforgettable main character!

Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood – vintage Atwood from 1997.

I let you go by Clare Mackintosh – set in Bristol, this novel is described as “chilling, emotional, claustrophic and atmospheric”…a fantastic late September read!

Roll of Thunder, hear my cry by Mildred D. Taylor. Winner of the Newbery Medal in 1977, the classic of children’s literature, is about racism in Mississippi during the Great Depression.

A variety of picture books and chapter books here as well!

After reading a review in today's Globe & Mail of 3 new books about Charlotte Bronte, I decided that I should read Jane Eyre one of these days...I just need to get my hands on a copy. An hour later, I was doing some tidying in the LFL and like manna from heaven, a pristine copy of Jane was there. Little Free Library...you're the bomb!

If you have a classic that you would like to pass on to someone with a serious gap in their reading history, drop it by the LFL at 18 Alsek. Of course, current bestsellers are most welcome as well!

Celebrating the 3rd anniversary of the Little Free Library @ 18 Alsek! We are still a favourite destination for readers in this `hood….and we suspect that there are few interlopers from other parts of Whitehorse who drop in to check us out. Everyone is welcome to take a book, drop a book off and let’s keep Whitehorse reading!!

Right now in the LFL, you will find

The Rosie Project / Graeme Simsion - you MUST read this book. That’s it…enough said.

Studhorse Man / Kroetsh - winner of the 1969 Governor General’s Award…if you missed it back then, here is your chance!

Child’s Play / Silken Laumann - from one of Canada’s most decorated athletes, this call to action to get our children playing so that we can move towards building safe, supportive communities and healthy schools.

No 1 Ladies Detective Agency - some kind LFL patron dropped off 3 books from this very popular series by Scottish author Alexander McCall Smith. Here is your chance to dive into this very popular series.

and for young readers:
Mitch and Amy by Beverly Cleary - a perennial favourite author amongst parents and children, this books tells the tale of the escapades of squabbling twins.

Love these sunny April weekends and all of the walkers, bikers, and strollers who pass by and can't resist a look into the treasure-trove that is the Library Free Library! This weekend's readers will have to choose from among these great pics:

Ru by Kim Thúy - this year's winner of Canada's favourite battle of the books, Canada Reads. The esteemed panel decided that this title was the "one book to break barriers".

The Cinnamon Peeler by Michael Ondaatje - these poems were written between 1963 and 1990...be prepared to be carried away

and now for something completely different...

Mommywood by Tori Spelling - just how does she do it? A how to guide to dealing with dirty diapers, temper tantrums and the paparazzi.

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn - Amy Dunne goes missing, her husband Nick is very evasive and becomes a prime suspect...but nothing is what is seems in this 2012 thriller.

I am always looking for donations of adult and children's books. The library is not large so please only bring by 1 or 2 of the best! I hope that you find something to take home in return. Happy Reading!!

Mornings in Whitehorse are a little dark these days...but not at the LFL! This morning on my way to work, I came upon two girls going through the books by the beam of the small light that I have stuck inside...happy readers on their way to school! It put a jump in my step.

So...by the light of the sun, the moon or the little LFL light, here are some of the titles that you can choose from:

One Duck Stuck - a Clarke family favourite!!..the board book version for the babe in your life.

Harold and the Purple Crayon - who doesn't love this tale of Harold and the world that he creates!

Tell by Frances Itani - this novel takes place in 1919 in the Ontario town of Deseronto. Itani is author of the award-winning Deafening.

The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold - one of my all-time favourites. Published in 2002, I didn't think that I would like a story of a murder victim looking down from heaven at her family but remarkably, it is very compelling.

Us Conductors by Sean Michaels - the winner of the 2014 Giller Prize. The story of Lev Termen, inventor of the Theremin. Check out this demo by the inventor himself

Looking spiffy at 2 years old! Last year was good to the LFL...note the patio stones and addition of hardy Yukon shrubs...not to mention the bright, blue READ sign. Every morning, kids waiting at the bus stop run over and fling open the door to see what they can find. Last night, a car stopped to take a look and there was another right behind it waiting to take a look...drive-thru Little Free Library! We always need donations of good adult novels and kids books...one or two please, not an entire box...unless they are all fantastic, then bring it on! Happy Reading!

The 18 Alsek Little Free Library is doing a brisk business in children's picture books and young adult fiction. A big thank you to Donna Shopland for her donation of two large boxes of pristine junior books….they are snatched up as quickly as I can put them out!

We can always use more adult fiction in the library so please pass on any gently-used paperbacks that you love.
