A Little Love From the Forest Floor🌲

The forest floor is full of wonders if you slow down and look closely. Tiny mushrooms pushing through the moss, insects going about their day, and quiet moments of magic happening at our feet.

Did you know caribou love mushrooms? 🍄🦌 In the wild, fungi can be an important part of their seasonal diet and here at the Preserve, bolete mushrooms are a favourite treat for the caribou in our care.

If you’re out exploring and harvesting mushrooms this season, the Preserve welcomes your bolete donations! Simply bring your freshly collected mushrooms to the front cabin any day between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., and our Animal Care team will make sure these special forest gifts reach our caribou.

So while you’re watching the mountains, lakes, and big northern mammals… remember to look down. The little things are pretty wild and wonderful too. 💗

Are these damsels in distress?

Not at all, they are having a beautiful moment in life where they share their love to each other and form a perfect heart ❤️.

While at the preserve in search of the larger wildlife, keep an eye all around the place because some wonders of the natural world could be smaller than what you are looking for.

There is something about August in the Yukon that invites us to pay attention. The mountains and lakes reflect a changing sky, and the land reminds us that every season carries its own rhythms. Whether you're setting out on a challenging alpine adventure or simply slowing down for an evening walk along a familiar trail, time spent outdoors has a way of offering perspective, resilience, and peace.

This is also a time of year when many people head onto the land for traditions and experiences that have been passed between generations. Others come to photograph wildlife, paddle and travel flowing waters, watch birds, hike new trails, or simply sit and listen. Each reflects a different way of knowing, being, and connecting with the natural world. At the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, we believe these diverse relationships with the North deepen our understanding of wildlife, landscapes, and one another.

As we move into a season of change, we invite you to notice the life all around you - the insects pollinating late summer fireweed, the trees preparing for autumn, thinhorn sheep navigating the cliffs, and the people who share and care for this remarkable place. Together, they remind us that we are all part of the landscape and a northern story. We hope you find something that inspires your own connection with the wild.

Just a few feet away, a yearling thinhorn sheep moved among the herd, unaware that she was about to become my most memorable patient. My heart raced as I waited to see if she had been successfully darted. The moment she was, our mission began.

This is the wood bison: North America's largest land mammal. Built like a boulder. Strong enough to plow through deep snow. Completely unbothered by your opinion.

And yet... still participates in . A reminder that you don't have to sacrifice your dignity to stick your tongue out. Although if you're weighing nearly a tonne, dignity is probably not something anyone questions.

Admire from a respectful distance. The tongue is cute. The rest of the bison is a very effective argument for personal space.
