Whitehorse City Council has appointed David Barrick as the Cityโ€™s new City Manager following a rigorous national search led by Leadership Source Inc., an independent executive management firm.

Barrick brings more than two decades of municipal, regional, public-sector and governance experience. He served as Chief Administrative Officer of Canadaโ€™s ninth-largest city and also brings CAO experience in smaller and mid-sized municipalities, along with elected service at both the municipal and regional levels. This breadth of experience gives him a strong understanding of organizational leadership, governance and service delivery across very different municipal contexts.

Throughout his career, Barrick has worked with Councils, senior leadership teams and employees to strengthen organizational performance, improve service delivery, support long-term financial planning and move strategic direction into implementation.

The City Manager reports directly to City Council and is the top administrative leader of the City of Whitehorse. In his new role, Barrick will lead the municipal organization, support Council decision making, advance Councilโ€™s Strategic Priorities, and ensure effective delivery of municipal services to citizens and businesses.

Barrick will begin working in his new role on September 2.

This fall, the City of Whitehorse is launching FireSmart initiatives in Cowley Creek and Mary Lake aimed at reducing wildfire risk throughout the city.

With funding from the Government of Yukon, this work will complement the Cityโ€™s existing FireSmart program, continuing to improve wildfire resilience around Whitehorse.

The first project began Sunday, August 30, in the Cowley Creek area, near the intersection of the Alaska Highway and Salmon Trail. Work is expected to continue until November.

The Cityโ€™s contractor is:
โ€ข Felling trees to increase spacing and reduce fuel load
โ€ข Removing tree branches
โ€ข Reducing debris on the ground

While work is being completed, residents may notice equipment, noise, and some temporary trail closures.

Detailed maps, FAQs and the status of salvageable fuel wood is available at wildfires.services.yukon.ca. Notifications will be provided when wood is available.

We appreciate the publicโ€™s cooperation and understanding as these important safety measures are undertaken.

The City of Whitehorse has developed a new Emergency Preparedness Guide to help residents prepare for emergencies before they happen.

The guide includes information on local hazards, emergency notifications, evacuation procedures, and how to prepare for an emergency, including resources for creating an emergency plan and a 72-hour kit.

You can also find free printed copies at outreach events led by the Cityโ€™s Emergency Preparedness Specialist, including at the Fireweed Community Market at Shipyards Park on Thursday, September 10.

The City works closely with partner organizations and has plans in place to respond to emergencies and protect the health and safety of citizens. The new Emergency Preparedness Guide provides citizens with useful information and practical advice so they can take steps to prepare themselves and their families for emergency situations. I encourage all citizens to review the guide, make a plan and prepare a 72-hour kit.โ€

โ€ข Flashing yellow: Slow down and proceed with caution.
โ€ข Flashing red: Stop, then continue only when it is safe. Treat as a stop sign.
โ€ข Non-operating traffic signals should be treated as a 4-way stop.

Installation of a new sidewalk on Sixth Avenue is scheduled to begin next week.

Work to install a new sidewalk on the west side of Sixth Avenue between Jarvis Street and Wood Street is set to begin on Tuesday, September 1, and is expected to take two weeks.

Parking will not be available on this block while work is underway.

Residents are asked to use caution and follow all construction area signage.
