In recognition of National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, the EMR Library will be closed on Monday, June 22. If you are looking for a book recommendation, consider “Protecting Indigenous knowledge and heritage: a Canadian obligation.” This book explains that although the United Nations recognized Indigenous rights with the adoption of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in 2007, countries like Canada have been slow to fully update their laws. Marie Battiste and James Sa’ke’j Youngblood Henderson outline what Indigenous knowledge is, who should have authority over it and how it can be protected. They also highlight the important role of Indigenous advocacy in shaping policy and advancing these rights. For more information or to borrow this book, contact the EMR Library.
