The Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory page is managed by the office of the Chief and Council. It is set up to allow Ogimaa and Council to make announcements, promote our citizens, community, and territory to a broader audience. This week Ogimaa Ominika met with our community’s brave police officers to commend them for their service and unwavering work protecting our community.

Two years ago our police service had 39 officers and civilians. Now, with our new policing agreement we are up to 67 and growing. More officers means a stronger, safer community.

True Effective community policing and community protection rely on collaborative approach between leadership, shared responsibility, and strong public trust.

Truth and Reconciliation Day

Today, we honour the children who were taken from their families and communities, remember those who never made it home, and stand with the Survivors of residential schools whose experiences continue to shape our families and our community today.

Here in Wiikwemkoong, the history we reflect on today is not distant. It lives in the experiences of our families, our Elders and our community.

But so does our strength.

Our language is still spoken. Our ceremonies continue. Our children are learning who they are and where they come from. And our responsibility is to ensure that the generations who follow us always have that connection to their culture, their families and their home.

Reconciliation cannot only be about acknowledging the past. It must also be reflected in the choices we make today. In everything we do we must do the work to protect our people, strengthen our community and ensure these harms are never repeated.

Today, we honour our Survivors, remember those who did not return home, and draw strength from the embrace of our community that is still here, and together.

Today, we were proud to celebrate the opening of Val’s Place at Nookomisnaang Shelter, a new seven-unit, fiften-bed transitional housing facility that will provide safe housing, counselling and support for people and families experiencing family violence.

This is about more than opening a new building. It is about making sure that when someone in our community needs safety, support and a place to begin healing, that help is here for them in Wiikwemkoong.

Miigwech to everyone who helped make Val’s Place possible, and especially to the staff who will continue doing this important work every day.

By investing in supports like Val’s Place, we are building a safer, stronger community and making sure our people have the resources they need when they need them most.

Today, with our administration team, we announced a new $38 million investment from the federal government for new water main infrastructure to service Rabbit Island Road and the Ojibway Heights subdivision.

This new infrastructure will support 430 existing and future homes and residential lots. It will also support new roads, fire hydrants, power lines, and drainage infrastructure.

This week Ogimaa Ominika was at the Robinson Huron Treaty Gathering to connect with Elders, leaders and community members from across the Treaty territory to discuss ways our nations can better collaborate with each other.

There was a lot to see, learn and share, including the opportunity to work on some incredible beadwork, artwork and stories that reflect our history and culture.

Wiikwemkoong was also recognized for hosting Robinson Huron Treaty gathering 2019.

Last Thursday was a special day in Wiikwemkoong as our newly elected Chief and Council were officially sworn in.

Miigwech to everyone who helped make the day so meaningful, especially our youth who welcomed Chief and Council with the drums, and to our community for the trust you have placed in this Council.

Now, the work continues as we focus on building a strong future for Wiikwemkoong.
