Formal Policing by Wikwemikong Constables started in the 1940’s. At that time they received their authority and warrant from the R.C.M.P. Some of the early police officers were Dominic Odjig, Harry Wabanosse, Ignatius Gabow, Joe Oshkabewisens and Arthur Jacko. In the early 60’s the responsibility for overseeing policing was taken over by the Ontario Provincial Police.
The Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service signed a Stand Alone Policing Agreement in January 1994. In March 2001 the Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service was incorporated and is now the Wikwemikong Police Service and represented by the Wikwemikong Police Service Board Corporation. The service is accountable to the community through the Wikwemikong Police Service Board. The mission of the Wikwemikong Tribal Police is to deliver a Community Based Policing Service. The Service will discharge its duties in a manner sensitive to and consistent with the needs, customs, culture and rights of the community.
The Police Service presently has 1 Chief of Police, 1 Sergeant, 1 A/Sergeant, 2 Det./Sergeants, 4 Senior F/N Constables, 6 F/N Constables, 1 Offender Transport Officer, 1 Finance Officer, 1 Court Case Manager, 1 Records Clerk/Receptionist, 3 Data Processors/Transcribers. Some of the constables have received specialized training in area of marine operation, breathalyzer technician, sexual assault investigators, snow vehicle operation, community services and criminal investigators, scenes of crime and DNA.
The Wikwemikong Tribal Police is equipped with two unmarked cruisers, two marked cruisers, one 4 X 4 Ford Expedition, and one boat. A moving radar device is used for traffic enforcement, an Alcotest Roadside Screening device is used to help combat impaired drivers, and an Intoxilyzer 5000C is used to determine blood alcohol levels. Two co-ed cells conjoined with a bull pin and 1 Y.O cell are used for temporary lockups. A prisoner es**rt van is shared with Ontario Provincial Police and U.C.C.M. Anishnaabe Police Service. Police Service moved into a new Police Facility on November 11, 2005.
