Effective immediately residents are allowed to return to the area.

For Residents Returning
Wildfires remain active and firefighting activities continue in the area. It is important for residents to stay out of active wildfire areas. Interfering in an active fire area will result in crews ceasing ground and air operations potentially endangering nearby properties.
Please watch for livestock and wildlife on roads, as fences may have been damaged.
Residents should be aware that there may be danger trees in wildfire affected areas. Danger trees on Crown Land will be dealt with by the BC Wildfire Service danger tree fallers. Homeowners and private landowners are recommended to work with an insurance agency to have an assessment done by a qualified arborist.
It is also important to note that air quality may remain poor as a result of smoke from nearby fire activity.
Residents returning to the area are encouraged to register for VoyentAlert! to receive a text, call or email regarding Evacuation Alerts and Orders.

Cariboo Regional District EOC Wildfire Update – August 8, 2026

The CRD Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) is actively monitoring wildfire activity in the Clinton and Big Bar area due to the potential impacts these fires may have on CRD communities, operations, and infrastructure.

🔥 French Bar Creek / Big Bar Fire Area: Warm, dry conditions continue to drive active fire behaviour, with lighter winds of 5–10 km/h expected today; the northwest portion near Canoe Creek, Big Bar Mountain and north of Jesmond remains the most active area, with continued growth possible toward the Fraser River. Crews, heavy equipment and structure protection personnel remain engaged across the fire area, strengthening control lines, mopping up hotspots and protecting structures. Smoke will remain visible across surrounding communities and to travellers along Highway 20 as conditions continue to evolve.

🔥 Bonanza Creek Fire Area: Warm, dry conditions and increasing afternoon winds, with gusts of 20–35 km/h, are expected to drive active fire behaviour. The fire could continue to grow and potentially merge with the French Bar Creek wildfire. Crews are extending hose lines, mopping up hotspots and constructing control lines toward Quartz Mountain to limit further growth.

🔥 Palmer Creek Fire Area: Aviation resources will continue to action the fire while heavy equipment continues to construct machine guard, tying into existing roads. Ground crews are also establishing hose lines and water sources to support suppression efforts. This afternoon, the fire experienced substantial growth due to continued hot and dry conditions combined with stronger, gusty southwesterly winds. Smoke from the fire will be highly visible to travellers on Highway 20 and surrounding communities.
