DAILY COVID-19 UPDATE FOR WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 5, 2020

The Porcupine Health Unit is reporting 1 new COVID-19 case in the health unit area. The new case is a male is his 20s from Timmins and is currently self-isolating at home. The current number of confirmed positive cases is now 72, one of which remains active. For more information, visit phu.fyi/coronavirus.

As we continue to learn more about COVID-19 through evidence-based research and expert advice, we are becoming more aware of risk of transmission in different settings. COVID-19 spreads more easily in certain locations than others. These locations are: in crowded places (with many people nearby), in close contact settings (where people have close-range conversations) and in confined and enclosed spaces (areas with poor ventilation). As a rule of thumb, we identify these places as the 3 C’s. The risk becomes higher in places where the 3 C’s overlap. This is important to know in order to reduce the chance of becoming infected, especially if you or someone you’re close to are at a higher risk to becoming ill. Remember that you are responsible for your own actions.

You can avoid the 3C’S by avoiding crowded places, limiting time in enclosed spaces, and when possible open windows and doors for ventilation. In addition, continue to follow the measures proven to reduce the risk of spread – physical distancing, hand washing, cough and sneeze etiquette, not touching your face, washing commonly touched surfaces, and wearing a non-medical mask or face covering when inside public spaces and outdoors if physical distancing is a challenge.

Our COVID-19 Information line is open today from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Call the toll-free number, 1-800-461-1818 or the PHU office in your community. See phu.fyi/offices for local contact numbers.

DAILY COVID-19 UPDATE FOR TUESDAY, AUGUST 4, 2020

There have been no new positive cases in the Porcupine Health Unit (PHU) region within the last 24 hours. The current number of confirmed positive cases is now 71, one of which remains active.

The Ontario government is encouraging everyone to download the new COVID Alert app on their smart phone. It lets users know if they may have been exposed to the virus. It is free, easy and safe to use. The more people who download the app, the more effective it will be in stopping the spread of COVID-19 (https://bit.ly/3fikfnp).

If you have symptoms, believe you were in contact with someone who was ill, or want to get tested for peace of mind, please do so. We encourage anyone who gets tested to seek their test results online using the Ministry portal (https://bit.ly/30dmCmX). If your test result comes back positive, you will have access to Contact +, a website to self-report demographic information that helps with support and follow-up.

Public health nurses will call individuals with a positive test to advise them of the lab results. They will also ask when symptoms started, how you’re feeling now, determine who you came in contact with, and provide instructions on continuing to self-isolate. You will receive daily calls to check-in until the isolation period is over. The purpose of these calls is to monitor symptoms, ensure you are continuing with self-isolation, and answer any questions you may have. Persons identified as close contacts will also receive daily calls, have to self-isolate, and be encouraged to get tested. For more information on COVID-19 testing, visit our webpage on the topic: https://bit.ly/316gjB2.

Our COVID-19 Information line is open today from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Call the toll-free number, 1-800-461-1818 or the PHU office in your community. See phu.fyi/offices for local contact numbers.
