Our Healing & Harm Reduction program runs 14 weeks with two hour weekly sessions starting in September.

We attended the Mediation Services AGM this week and appreciated hearing expertise from restorative justice practitioners.

Mediation Services' Restorative Justice Diversion is an alternative to the court process and a place to address the impact of crime and conflict.

The John Howard Society and Mediation Services are both members of the Restorative Justice Association of Manitoba.

Notes from the AGM:

β€œConflict escalates when I stop treating my experience as an experience and start treating it as reality itself.”

"Curiosity is the most important ingredient for conflict resolution."

For National Indigenous Peoples Day, we're sharing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Call to Action #35 which calls on the federal government to invest in more healing lodges as alternatives to prison.

Given the federal government's recent passage of Bill C-14 which will only continue cycles of colonial violence and attempted budget cuts to prison library staff positions (a decision reversed thanks to advocacy efforts across the country), we unfortunately do not see the federal government taking the TRC seriously in their actions.

Throughout the summer, we will share opportunities for the Winnipeg community to support the Four Roads Healing Lodge, which is a halfway house and alternative to prison.

The Four Roads Healing Lodge provides opportunities for individuals in conflict with the law to stabilize and connect with community and cultural resources.

🌿 The Four Sacred Medicines 🌿 Excerpt from First Nations Teachings & Practices published by the Manitoba First Nations Education Resource Centre Inc.

This book as well as cultural programs are available to residents of the Four Roads Healing Lodge, which is a halfway house and alternative to prison operated by the John Howard Society of Manitoba.

This week, healing lodge residents and community members participated in a pipe ceremony and practiced traditional drumming songs in our culture room.

Reconnecting with Indigenous cultural practices is a key part of helping individuals heal from intergenerational trauma and rebuild healthy lives after incarceration.

Offering cultural programming is one way the John Howard Society works toward fulfilling the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action.

Over the summer, we will share more stories from the healing lodge and discuss the importance of healing lodges as alternatives to prison.

Healing lodges are especially relevant given the federal government's passage of Bill C-14 which will only continue cycles of colonial violence that keep prisons overcrowded and will certainly not create opportunities for truth, reconciliation, and healing.

We appreciate the support of the greater community in our work to enhance Indigenous cultural programming available to healing lodge residents throughout the year.

πŸ“š Good News! Our Get The Story Out program is now available through the John Howard Society of Brandon πŸ“š

πŸ“– The Get The Story Out program allows dads in prison to connect with their kids by reading them a story. We provide children's books while volunteers or staff record the father reading and then transfer the recording to a CD. The storybook and CD are then sent to the child by mail.

πŸ“š The Get The Story Out program is now available in Brandon, in addition to Headingley, Remand, Milner Ridge, and Stony Mountain.

πŸ“– If you or someone you know would like to participate, contact institution staff or JHS Manitoba & JHS Brandon.
