Living Prairie Museum is a unique urban nature preserve that protects endangered tall grass prairie. The site has walking trails and an interpretive centre.

Events and education programs are held year-round.

Help us gather the seeds we use to restore and improve prairie habitat around Winnipeg.
Learn about native seed harvesting and you can keep some of what you collect!

It’s starting to look a bit like fall out there! The Interpretive Centre is now open Saturdays 10am-4pm. The prairie, as always, is open everyday!

Join us for FREE drop-in activities every Saturday. Great for any ages: come anytime during our open hours and stay as long as you like.

Yesterday, with Assiniboine Park & Zoo staff, 20 trackers were deployed on monarch butterflies at Living Prairie Museum. These trackers will help us learn more about the migration south for butterflies born in Manitoba. This is important information to help this endangered species, and it also is the first time these trackers have been used in western Canada. They are part of a larger project coordinated by Canadian Wildlife Service.

In one day, two of the monarchs already made it to northern Minnesota! (The strong northwest wind probably helped).
You can follow along using the Project Monarch app, looking for butterflies labeled MB26___.

Lots to see and do this weekend at Living Prairie Museum!

Take a walk through the big bluestem which is extra tall this season!

Join us for a FREE guided walk Friday at 11am or Saturday at 11am or 1pm. No registration needed. Please note that guided walks only continue until end of August.

Or drop-in anytime on Saturday or Sunday 10am-4pm to learn more about our wonderful wild bees! These are free drop-in activities for all ages. Drop-in activities will continue on Saturdays in September.

Aphids on your milkweed? Will it hurt the plant? Will it hurt the monarchs?

You may notice orange aphids on your milkweed in late summer. These are oleander aphids, an import from Europe that like to live on milkweed and dogbane plants.
Aphids suck liquid from plant tissues. This can cause plant damage if there are a large amount of aphids, or an already stressed plant. They don’t hurt monarch caterpillars directly.

If you have an otherwise healthy milkweed plant, usually the aphids don’t cause too much damage.
If you want to manage these aphids and protect monarch caterpillars:
- DON’T use insecticides, soaps, or a strong spray of water: these may also harm the monarchs
- REMOVE aphids by hand (squishing or brushing off)
- DON’T fertilize your milkweed: the aphids like the nitrogen that fertilizer gives the plants
- WATER your milkweed (especially swamp milkweed). This will help keep the plant healthy to grow despite the aphids.
- PLANT MORE than one milkweed in your garden, and try to have lots of diversity of other plants. This will help attract natural predators of aphids, and provide more options to monarchs.
