UPDATE 8 p.m. May 31: Thank you customers in the Westwood area for reducing electricity use over the weekend, while we do work that will increase capacity and reliability in the area. Resume your normal electricity use as of 6:00 am Monday.

Winnipeg – Westwood: we’re asking customers in the area to reduce electrical usage during peak times from now until June 2 as we make important capacity upgrades. Please hold off on using appliances like dishwashers, washing machines, clothes dryers, and electric vehicle chargers until after 10 p.m. each day. We recommend setting air conditioners to 24 degrees to help reduce consumption. This is a temporary measure. It’s the season of construction and summer storms, both of which can bring our work job sites closer to where you're driving. If you see our crews working on or near the road, please slow down and give them space to work safely.

This doodad is called a “cutout.” It holds a fuse, which works like a breaker in your house: when there’s a problem with the line, the cutout opens to disconnect from the larger circuit, preventing further damage and bigger outages. But some of our older cutouts could crack and let in moisture that could lead to short circuits, pole fires and outages. So, we’re installing newer models that will help reduce the risk of pole fires and enhance safety and reliability.

You may have noticed some lane closures on Garry Street and Portage Avenue. Our crews are working safely to rebuild an underground chamber. Some of these chambers are VERY old and in need of an upgrade. We understand road work can be frustrating, so we appreciate your patience and caution passing our crews working on the street.

We continue to repair damage and restore power outages caused by severe winds this Thursday and Friday. The windstorm downed power lines, broke trees, caused pole fires, broke utility poles and more, resulting in hundreds of power outages and thousands of customers without power across southern Manitoba.

Our crews are making every effort to safely restore power as quickly as possible, but some customers may be without power overnight.

Be safe: if you see a downed power line, stay at least 10 metres away and call 911.

Update (May 15 at 3:15 p.m.): we’ve made significant progress with restoration, but more outages keep rolling in — we’re looking at extensive damage and a lot active outages over a wide area. We may not have an estimated time of restoration for your area, but once you’ve reported your outage online or at 1-888-624-9376, it will be in our queue. Progress depends on damage and travel time. If you see a downed power line: assume it’s live, stay back at least 10 metres, and call 911.

We continue to respond to outages across the province due to high winds and weather — here's a look at some of the damage we're dealing with.

If your power is out, please report it so we can respond. The restoration times listed on our website or in customer notifications may not be accurate — it will depend on progress and travel time, given the number of scattered, isolated outages. High winds can bring down power lines, which cause outages and can be dangerous. If you see a downed line: assume it’s live, stay back 10 metres, and call 911.

Winnipeg is not immune to today's weather. High winds and dust storm conditions have downed power lines and broken trees in Winnipeg and the surrounding areas. While crews have been working as safely and quickly as possible to restore power, worsening conditions—extremely low visibility and dangerous wind speeds—mean our crews cannot safely work through the night. We are pausing work as of midnight, responding only to 911/emergency calls, and will resume all other work in the light of day.

This means some of our customers will remain out of power overnight and into the morning. We appreciate your patience as we navigate these challenging conditions in an effort to restore your power. View our outage map and report your power outage at hydro.mb.ca/outages.
