In July, interdisciplinary artist Francys Catherine Ruiz Moreno returned to her home country of Colombia to study traditional ceramic practices in the town of Ráquira.

Funded by a Travel/Professional Development grant, Francys worked with artisans at the Taller de Cerámica Nápoles, participating in the full process – from collecting clay to shaping, firing, and finishing works.

"The highlight of the project was the opportunity to witness pottery as a living tradition rather than simply a craft," said Francys. "I initially focused on developing my technical skills, but I left with a deeper interest in exploring themes of cultural memory, colonization, and the disappearance of traditional knowledge through my artistic practice."

En juillet, l'artiste interdisciplinaire Francys Catherine Ruiz Moreno est retournée dans son pays natal, la Colombie, afin d'étudier les pratiques traditionnelles de la céramique dans la ville de Ráquira.

Grâce à une subvention Voyage et perfectionnement professionnel, Francys a travaillé aux côtés d'artisans du « Taller de Cerámica Nápoles », participant à l'ensemble du processus – de la collecte de l'argile au modelage, en passant par la cuisson et la finition des pièces.

« Le point fort de ce projet a été de pouvoir découvrir la poterie comme une tradition vivante plutôt que comme un simple artisanat », expliqué Francys. « Au départ, je me suis concentrée sur le développement de mes compétences techniques, mais je suis repartie avec un intérêt plus profond pour l'exploration, à travers ma pratique artistique, de thèmes tels que la mémoire culturelle, la colonisation et la disparition des savoirs traditionnels. »

Les subventions Voyage et perfectionnement professionnel financent des projets liés au développement de la pratique artistique ou de la carrière, notamment la participation à des ateliers, des formations spécialisées, des mentorats et des lectures publiques. The next Riding Mountain Artist-in-Residence for 2026 is interdisciplinary artist Derek Dunlop! 🏞️

During his stay in the Deep Bay Cabin, he will be working on an artist book called "Found Landscapes," which will explore how landscapes in Canada are shaped through visual and textual culture.

"I look forward to returning to the cabin and studio and to seeing how the site and surrounding environment once again shape my practice," says Derek. "I am especially eager to revisit places that were meaningful during my previous residency—including the museum, cultural centres, and hiking trails—and to experience them again through the lens of this current project."

Le prochain artiste résident au parc national du Mont-Riding pour 2026 est l'artiste interdisciplinaire Derek Dunlop! 🏞️

Pendant son séjour à la cabane de Deep Bay, il travaillera sur un livre d'artiste intitulé « Found Landscapes » (paysages trouvés), qui traitera de la façon dont les paysages canadiens sont influencés par la culture visuelle et textuelle.

« J'ai hâte de retourner à la cabane et au studio, et de voir comment le site et le milieu environnant influenceront à nouveau ma pratique, » a dit Derek. « J'ai surtout hâte de revisiter les lieux que j'avais trouvés particulièrement importants lors de ma résidence précédente – notamment le musée, les centres culturels et les sentiers de randonnée – et de refaire cette expérience sous l'angle de mon projet actuel. »

The next Riding Mountain Artist-in-Residence for 2026 is poet Sharanpal Ruprai! 🏞️

During her stay in the Deep Bay Cabin, she will be completing a first draft of her third book-length poetry manuscript.

"With this collection, I have a very specific audience in mind, that is, Sikh/Punjabi Diasporic communities," says Sharanpal. "I need a bit of isolation for this project to focus, while being immersed in nature will inspire how my words take shape on the page."

On July 14, Larry Desrochers was awarded the 2026 Manitoba Arts Council's Manitoba Arts Award of Distinction. The award was presented at a reception hosted by Manitoba Opera at the Centennial Concert Hall which celebrated Larry Desrochers’ impressive 26-year tenure with the company.

This award is presented annually by Manitoba Arts Council / Conseil des arts du Manitoba to a professional artist or arts/cultural professional in recognition of the highest level of artistic excellence and contribution to the development of the arts in Manitoba.
