CANADIAN PET OWNERS, YOUR INPUT IS NEEDED!

We’ve been asked to help share an important Canadian research study through Dalhousie University about pets and disaster preparedness.

After seeing firsthand how wildfires and evacuations can impact people and their animals, we know how important it is that pets are included in emergency planning.

Researchers want to hear directly from Canadian pet owners about their experiences, preparedness and needs. The information collected may help shape future policies, programs and resources for animals and their families during disasters.

The survey is anonymous, confidential and takes about 15 minutes to complete.

You must be 18+, live in Canada and currently have a pet.

Take the survey here:

Please consider taking a few minutes to participate and help make sure animals are part of the conversation when Canada plans for emergencies!!

Global News stopped by our shelter yesterday to talk to me about people surrendering their pets, because they cannot access veterinary care, can’t afford it, or can’t find proper housing that accepts pets.

It’s the sad reality we have in our province..with non profits and charities having to continue to step in with limited funds, until the leaders from all levels of government decide to make this a priority.

Roaming dogs and cats have a higher chance at mating, fighting, getting hit by cars or being injured by wildlife.

Keeping your pet on your own property will help reduce the chance of your pet being injured or getting pregnant…do your part and help reduce the pet population.

Bepsi update, 2 years later. ❤️

After being attacked by a much larger dog, Bepsi, now Dante suffered a skull fracture with a huge abscess and spent his days up north, walking in circles. Kind community members rescued him and flew him to Winnipeg, where we got him veterinary care. We had no idea what his future would be like, but he was eating well, fighting hard and so sweet, so we gave him a chance.

Today, Dante is thriving in his forever home thanks to our friends at Rebel Dog Rescue in southern Ontario.

A loving family, kids to play with, a dog brother, and the happy ending we all hoped for. 💖

Old shepherds have my heart.

Muskwa spent the night at the vet. Explosive diarrhea and vomiting, and his ba****ck is ripped up. Poor old man is just covered in scars.

I love caring for him already…he’s so silly I can tell. I am grateful to all who donated and helped him get vet care.

X-rays, barium dye, parvo test, bloodwork…he also needs vaccines, dewormer, nexgard spectra, neuter, pain meds, antibiotics etc… it’s a lot!

Thanks to all who donated!! 💖

Another dump puppy arrived! How sweet is he! This little baby grew up without human interaction yet but he already loves us so much.

Pups do not belong at the dump. It doesn’t matter if they were born there or they were dropped off…people shouldn’t be normalizing little ones living there, eating garbage.

Puppies are not garbage. They have a deep connection with humans and they deserve our love and support.

If you see a puppy at a dump, please contact a local rescue or shelter. They need dewormer and might have lice or a virus called Parvo. Let’s get them out of there before winter! No judgment, just love! 💖

I found out yesterday that Kevin passed away. I’m heartbroken. 😭

Kevin was one of our boat taxi helpers in Island Lake. Every time we asked for help, he was there. He had such a big heart for the rez dogs. If he found one that was suffering, especially a puppy, he would take it home and care for it until we could help.

I am so grateful our paths crossed. Together, we were able to save so many dogs over the years.

People often see rescuers like us on the front lines, but they don’t always see the Indigenous people behind the scenes who make this work possible. The ones who quietly step up, ask for nothing in return, and do it because they love their communities and the animals that call them home. Kevin was one of those people.

Northern Manitoba is full of hidden rez dog warriors like him. They may never receive the recognition they deserve, but we will continue to share their stories because they are an important part of every life that is saved.

Thank you for everything, Kevin. Take care of the ones we couldn’t save. Rest easy, buddy. There is no more pain now. 💖

A big thank you to his wonderful wife, Jessica, for sharing this beautiful photo of Kevin feeding the dogs. It made us smile, and it’s exactly how we’ll remember him.

Another little sweetheart flew down yesterday from Pukatawagan. Her name is Gracie. She’s a tiny girl but she’s full grown!! She’s survived living outside for a very long time, so now that she’s safe with us before winter, I am so proud we made it happen!!

Big thanks to our wonderful Puk friends for taking such good care of the dogs, while they wait to be rescued! 💖

Gracie will be making her way to Ottawa and our wonderful friends at Pawsitive Steps Dog Rescue for accepting her into their adoption program!!

Slowly, we continue to do the hard work. Sunny days or grey skies…our hearts beat for the rez dogs!

So proud of this girl.

Her name is Corinne from York Landing, and while we’ve had our ups and downs over the last 10 years, I couldn’t be prouder of everything she’s accomplished.

Corinne has poured her heart into making York Landing a safer place for both people and dogs. She has worked tirelessly to bring veterinary care, dog fencing, bylaws, registration, and other much needed resources to the community. Her Dog Fencing Project is helping families safely contain their dogs, reducing roaming, and improving public safety.

One of the most encouraging things to watch has been the growing support from leadership. Year after year, more leaders have stepped up, believed in the vision, and worked alongside Corinne to keep their community safe. That kind of collaboration is what creates real progress for communities.

There is no single solution to the roaming dog crisis. It takes spay and neuter programs, veterinary access, vaccinations, education, responsible ownership, animal control, bylaws, and safe fencing. York Landing is showing that they can build those community-led solutions together.

Save A Dog Network has been proud to work alongside York Landing over the years, and watching Corinne turn one of her biggest dreams into reality has been inspiring.

Congratulations. Chief Leroy Constant, council and your community should be so proud and continue supporting your efforts. Keep reaching higher. You’re making a real difference, and I can’t wait to see what you’ll do next!!
