More than 1,200 Indigenous women and girls in Canada have gone missing or been murdered since 1980. Vigils honouring missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls are held across Canada on October 4 each year, raising public awareness and building a movement of social change on violence against Indigenous women and girls.

Indigenous Services Canada’s Non-insured Health Benefits (NIHB) program provides eligible clients with coverage for medically necessary goods and services, in the following benefit areas:

- pharmacy
- vision care
- dental care
- mental health counselling
- medical supplies and equipment
- medical transportation

Health services outside of the benefit areas listed above are not covered by the NIHB program.

The Southeast Resource Development Council (SERDC) mourns the loss of Chief Jim Bear who passed August 27, 2025.

Chief Bear was committed to his community members of Brokenhead Ojibway Nation, and to serving on a number of SERDC's affiliate board of directors. He will be greatly missed.

His leadership, wisdom and commitment will be his everlasting legacy. SERDC Chiefs Board of Directors and Staff sends our deepest sympathies to all that are impacted by his loss.
