Busy week at WBVFD! đź’Şđźš’

Long before the emergency tones sound, there’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work required to keep a department our size ready. We share these posts to show the public just how much goes into maintaining a modern fire service.

This week we had all our SCBAs complete their annual inspection, and our trucks’ pumps were professionally, 3rd-party tested.

Staying prepared means staying on top of the details. 🔥👨‍🚒

The fire service isn’t exempt from mechanical issues—we just work to catch problems long before they become emergencies.

We’ve officially started the process of changing out our frontline turnout gear to PFAS-free.

This is a long-term four year project, but we’re moving forward and making steady progress toward our goal.

PFAS (“Forever Chemicals”) have been used in turnout gear for years. Only recently in the last number of years, the dangers of these chemicals are coming to light. While there is PFAS in alot of everyday products, when we go into a fire, or even close to a fire our equipment is super heated and our absorption rates climb rapidly as we sweat.

Firefighters are exposed to many harmful substances, including smoke, products of combustion, and carcinogens. Making the right decisions to protect our membership and everyone who sacrifices their time to serve the community is paramount.

This transition is not a cheap venture. A fire suit costs around $5,000 and with a crew of over 30 members, it's not a light task for any small municipality, but our volunteer members deserve the proper equipment to be ready when they’re called upon to perform.

Thank you to everyone who supports the Witless Bay Volunteer Fire Dept and helps us take these important steps. Thank you to the Towns, Town Councils, and LSDs that we serve who support us and allow us to do our job, and ensure we have the right gear to protect our membership.

We had such a great time at the Fire Department Open House! The Fire Department was thrilled to host this event and see the community come out to connect and enjoy the day and meet some of the volunteers.

Huge thanks to the Volunteers from Witless Bay Days for organizing everything so smoothly and making sure we had everything we needed

A special thank you to Foodland (Bay Bulls) for an $800.00 donation, along with all the food and drinks provided for the whole event—your support truly makes a difference.

We also want to recognize the Knights of Columbus for hosting the Ken White Memorial Dart Tournament, and for lending a hand to the Fire Department throughout the day, backing us up incase a call came in during the event. The Knights raised almost $1900 !

Lastly, thank you to Shawn Lewis—he has been extremely helpful in making this event a success and punched many hours behind the scenes on the shore helping with coordination as well as running the obstacle course on bicycle safety!

The open house is one of our favorite days of the year and we look forward to seeing everyone next year.

Our family, serving yours.

When seconds count, having a crew that is dialed in and ready to work is paramount. All bets are off, and that family is counting on us to get this done quickly.

When a vehicle rolls onto its side, the game is more complicated. Heavy stabilization is key, as the vehicle may be extremely unstable. Firefighters may need to work from ladders, on top of the vehicle, and inside the vehicle to free trapped occupants. This may be a car for training, but much larger vehicles—such as heavy trucks and buses—are simply bigger, heavier, and harder.

No two rescues are the same, and the textbooks are vague. They show techniques, but they don’t cover when metal fails and tears away, forcing plans to change, or major obstructions such as ditches and rocks—both of which can throw major complications into your plan.

Time on the tools is key, and experience from trial and error matters just as much.

This is gained on a training ground long before the emergency. Tossing in complications like a defective pump, an overheated reciprocating saw, minimal manpower, or even awkward patient location will humble even some of the best crews.

Hours like this, punched in training, help us sharpen our tools, learn what actually works, and what probably was filler in a text book.

Thanks to our friends at The Field Mechanic for an awesome upgrade! 🙌

In our district we are surrounded by hills and water—so when the call comes, seconds matter. Our rescue truck now has new rope rescue anchor points installed, giving us dedicated tie-off points and helping us respond faster and safer. These points are great for low angle scenarios in which we need to build a rope system into our truck etc.

Our only request for fabrication was make em so strong they could support the weight of all of our 30 members combined !! You could pull down a building with these things ! Boy did they deliver!

Night #2 of our vehicle extrication refresher got a little wet, but the crews adapted and made the most of it. Heavy rain changed our training plan last minute, so we shifted to practicing box cribs for vehicle stabilization and finished with a fun team-building challenge using the Jaws of Life and played a classic game of Jenga. While fun, time on these tools is key. When crews need to use these, they may be inches away from a patient. Time on the tools and knowing how the tool reacts and move is key, and pratice is everything.

Night #3 included two vehicles that became “convertibles” after roof removal, giving everyone hands-on practice with real extrication techniques.
