We are heartbroken by the tragic events that occurred in British Columbia earlier this week.

We extend our deepest condolences to all those affected. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the community of Tumbler Ridge as they mourn this profound and unimaginable loss. Being a small, rural community much like our own, this tragedy hits close to home and is a reminder of how connected communities like ours truly are.

As a sign of solidarity, our flag was lowered to half-mast yesterday in honour of the people of Tumbler Ridge and all British Columbians as they grieve.

Batteries power so much of our daily lives, but when they’re stored or disposed of improperly, they can create serious safety risks — including fires. This puts not only households at risk, but also waste collectors and recycling facilities.

You can help keep everyone safe by following a few simple tips:
• Never store new and used batteries together
• Store batteries in a cool, dry place
• Keep batteries out of reach of children
• Tape or cover battery terminals before recycling
• Avoid damaging batteries and keep them away from metal objects
• Use approved recycling programs like Call2Recycle
• Take damaged batteries to a hazardous waste facility, such as our C&D Site

Batteries do not belong in household garbage.

Thank you for helping keep our community, collection crews, and facilities safe.

Did you hear? We can recycle even more!

Big changes to recycling in Nova Scotia are now in effect!
As of December 1, 2025, everyone in Nova Scotia can recycle the same curbside materials, no matter where you live.

You can now recycle even more items, including:
Frozen juice containers
Deodorant & toothpaste tubes
Coffee cups
Ice cream tubs

These items go in:
Blue Bag #1 – recycling containers
Blue Bag #2 – paper & boxboard

This is a big step toward a cleaner, more consistent, and more sustainable recycling system for our province.

We know that poor cell signal is a major concern for many residents, and the Municipality is taking steps to advocate for better coverage in our area. To support our efforts, we’ve launched a petition to show just how important this issue is to our community.

There are two versions of the petition, one paper and one electronic. Both contain the exact same information, but are separate, so you can choose to sign either one or both if you wish.

You can sign the paper version at the following locations:

▪ Anthony's Food Market & Pizzeria
▪ Woods Harbour Community Centre
▪ Phil Scott's Fuels
▪ Petro Canada
▪ Irving
▪ Sandy Wickens Memorial Arena
▪ Clark's Harbour Red & White
▪ Vernon d'Eon Fishing Supplies (661 South Side Road)
▪ Riverside Convenience
▪ J. Kenney Garage

You can sign the online version here: https://www.ourcommons.ca/petitions/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-6913

The petitions will remain open for signatures until the beginning of January.

Your participation will help us make a stronger case to service providers and government partners to improve cellular coverage across the municipality. Thank you for adding your voice!
