🗳️ VOTE FAIR RENT 🗳️

🚨 Food banks serve as a key indicator of the rental affordability crisis: Ontarians are using food banks at unprecedented levels, with most visitors being market renters who have less than $100 left each month after paying rent.

⚠️ Food insecurity is impacting Mississauga significantly and numerous communities in Ontario are facing similar struggles.

👉 Ontario must adopt a bold vision for rental affordability — one that includes full rent control!

🗳️ Ontarians need to

👉 A new government in Ontario committed to fair rent would prioritize:

🟣 Scraping the 2018 Rent Control Exemption;
🔶 Ending Vacancy Decontrol; and
🟣 Eliminating Above Guideline Increases

🗳️ This election Vote Fair Rent❗

🏠 The debate is over – Rent Control Works! 🏠

🔒 Rent control stabilizes housing costs and protects tenants from skyrocketing rents and economic evictions. Claims that rent control stifles development are myths – even studies from CMHC show no evidence that modern rent control prevents new housing construction.

⚖️ Instead, successive governments have allowed weak rent control policies to drive Ontario’s housing crisis by allowing landlords to exploit loopholes.

📈 In Ottawa, for example, CMHC’s 2022 Rental Market Report found that because of Vacancy Decontrol, two-bedroom units that turned over saw rent increases of 17% in rents, while existing tenants protected by their rent controlled units only saw 1.2%.

📢 Renters must be protected. The province must eliminate vacancy decontrol!

We are deeply concerned by the Government of Ontario's potential use of the "notwithstanding clause" to evict encampment residents and bypass their protected human rights. These residents are some of the most marginalized people in our society, and this action by the Ontario government would make their already dire predicament worse.

We're joining a growing group of over 70 Ontario Councillors, hundreds of members of the legal community, and thousands of members of the public in calling on ALL of our governments to focus their efforts on finding solutions that meet the needs of people experiencing homelessness, while respecting their rights and dignity - NOT denying them through the notwithstanding clause.

Since 2000, November 22nd has been recognized as National Housing Day in Canada. Despite the decades of tireless advocacy efforts by diverse communities across the country, unfortunately, Canada’s housing and homelessness crises have only gotten worse since the inaugural National Housing Day.
