Hot weather can be more than uncomfortable, it can be dangerous. Before heading out in the heat, take a moment to run through these simple heat safety essentials.

Stay hydrated, limit your time in the direct sun when possible, and check in on family, friends, and neighbours.

If you or someone you know is showing signs of heat related illnesses, such as:

• Moist, warm, dry or hot skin
• Headaches, weaknesses, nausea, vomiting, and fainting
• Anxiety, dizziness or altered behaviour (irritable, aggressive, unusual)
• Rapid or shallow breathing

Call 911 in case of emergency. Our teams are out in the community and ready to help whenever needed.

Stay cool and stay safe, everyone! ☀️

Korrina Turkenburg always believed if you’re going to dedicate yourself to work, it should be in a field that genuinely captivates you. The dynamic and impactful nature of paramedicine had always intrigued her, which motived her to make it her career.

Korrina began her paramedic journey as an EMT in Wadena in 1994, only planning to work there for a couple of years to gain experience before moving back to Regina. However, she and her children quickly fell in love with the community, building connections that ultimately lead to their decision to stay.

Driven by a passion to advance her skills and provide a higher level of care, the following years were followed by continuous learning. Korrina upgraded her education to become an Advanced EMT, followed by an Intermediate Care Paramedic, and later in 2015, an Advanced Care Paramedic.

When the Saskatchewan Health Authority initiated the Community Paramedicine Program, she eagerly embraced the opportunity to contribute.

“The prospect of being part of a community paramedicine program presented an exciting opportunity to broaden my impact within the healthcare system and to engage with patients in a more holistic manner.”

Korrina takes great pride in the skills and knowledge she’s acquired throughout her career, particularly in areas related to community health and patient-centred care.

“My training in advanced clinical skills, coupled with a strong understanding of social determinants of health, has equipped me to address not only the immediate medical needs of patients but also their broader health and wellness concerns. This holistic approach is vital in community paramedicine and is something I am particularly proud of.”

Thank you, Korrina, and our entire team at Medavie Health Services West Shamrock, for everything you do for your patients, your colleagues, and your communities.

Samantha Hall began her career in paramedicine with an unexpected push in the right direction. After unsuccessfully trying out for policing, a friend dared her to apply to EMS. What started as a challenge quickly became a lifelong career and passion.

Samantha began her EMS career in 1999 in Tisdale as an EMT, where she continuously evolved her knowledge and skills, eventually becoming an Intermediate Care Paramedic.

After 6 years in Tisdale, Samantha moved to Rose Valley, where she had a greater opportunity to utilize her skills and become more immersed in education and ambulance operations.

“Education quickly became a major passion of mine, and I eventually became a Heart and Stroke instructor as well as a Canadian Red Cross First Aid and CPR instructor.”

In 2013, continuing her passion for education, Samantha completed the Advanced Care Paramedic program in Regina and has now worked as an ACP for over a decade.

She became increasingly involved in clinical education, Continuing Medical Education coordination, mentorship, and leadership. This experience led her to her current role as an Operations Supervisor with Medavie Health Services West, where she continues to work clinically while remaining heavily involved in education and staff development.

“As paramedicine evolved over my career, I realized there were many opportunities beyond traditional frontline ambulance work, including education, mentorship, leadership, and system development. Pursuing my ACP designation opened doors for future career opportunities while also allowing me to provide a higher level of care in rural settings.”

Thank you, Samantha, and our entire team at Medavie Health Services West Shamrock, for everything you do for your patients, your colleagues, and your communities.

Medavie Health Services West Shamrock is fortunate to have dedicated and passionate paramedics who push themselves to be the best they can be for the communities they serve.

They show up every day with care, compassion, patience, and professionalism; not just during the big moments, but in the quiet ones too.

No matter what the day brings, our paramedics lead with strength, empathy and commitment in everything they do. They are constantly learning, growing, and supporting each other so they can provide the best care possible when it matters the most.

Paramedic Services Week gives us an opportunity to recognize and celebrate our team, but our appreciation for them goes far beyond this week. Thank you to each and every paramedic for the work that they do, the support that they give, and the difference they make in the lives of so many people.

Every day, paramedics and nurses work side by side to support our communities through emergencies, difficult moments, and recovery. We see firsthand the impact nurses have not only on patients, but the entire healthcare system around them.

From busy departments to patient handovers and continued care, your role shapes the experience and outcomes of so many people every single day.

Thank you for everything that you do.

Mental Health Week is a chance to slow down and think about how we're taking care of ourselves and the people around us.

This year’s theme chosen by the Canadian Mental Health Association “Come Together, Canada: Stronger Connections. Better Mental Health.” highlights how much social connection matters for our health and well-being. Whether it's at work, at home, or in our community, small moments of connection each other can make a difference.

Taking time to check in, reach out, and create safe spaces for meaningful conversation helps us build stronger and healthier communities for everyone.
