Black bears can grow up to 170 kg while Grizzly bears are nearly double that, with males topping out at 300 kg. Bears normally avoid people but are attracted to the smell of food or garbage.

If bears are allowed to access human food and garbage, they quickly learn to associate it with people and become what is called food-conditioned.

Without negative consequences, they may lose their fear of people and increase risk of human-bear conflicts.

Why can’t we relocate all problem bears? Studies show that some bears do better than others with relocation. Bears need to be taken a long distance from their current location to suitable habitat away from humans. In some cases, even over long distances food conditioned bears will come back or end up in someone else’s backyard if attractants are not secured.
