Joint Task Force (North) (JTFN) is one of six regional joint task forces of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). JTFN is responsible for conducting CAF operations and exercises in the Canadian North with mission partners, and directing any requests for CAF assistance in its area of responsibility. JTFN has its headquarters in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, and detachments in Iqaluit, Nunavut, and

Whitehorse, Yukon. It is also hosts the following military units: 440 (Transport) Squadron, the Yellowknife Company, and 1st Canadian Ranger Patrol Group. La Force opérationnelle interarmées (Nord) (FOIN) compte parmi les six forces régionales de ce genre mises sur pied par les Forces armées canadiennes (FAC). La FOIN exécute des opérations et exercices des FAC dans le Nord canadien avec des partenaires clés et dirige les interventions des FAC dans sa zone de responsabilité. Le quartier général de la FOIN est installé à Yellowknife, dans les Territoires du Nord-Ouest, et des détachements à Iqaluit, au Nunavut et à Whitehorse, au Yukon. Elle accueille également les unités militaires suivantes : le 440e (Escadron) de transport, la compagnie Yellowknife et le 1er Groupe de patrouilles des Rangers canadiens. The 11th annual Prospector Challenge is complete!

This year's top finishers by combined age category:
Whippersnappers: Capt Vincent Lemelin & OCdt Michael Vermette (2h 44m)
Mid-life Crisis: Sgt Daniel Beaudoin & Sgt Devon Allooloo (2h 29m)
Old and Bold: Capt John Marsland & Capt Cordell Friesen (3h 12m)

Sgt Beaudoin & Sgt Allooloo finished first place, overall, and were presented with the Prospector Challenge "Boot" trophy.

Congratulations to all the participants on their endurance and ability to overcome adversity as they paddled, portaged, and rucked more than 18 kilometers around Yellowknife, NT while carrying a 20lb sandbag!

Thank you to all who planned, participated, and supported another successful year.

Sgt Beaudoin & Sgt Allooloo ont terminé en première place au classement général et ont reçu le trophée de la « botte » du Défi du Prospecteur.

Félicitations à tous les participants pour leur endurance et leur capacité à surmonter l’adversité en pagayant, en faisant des portages et en marchant avec charge sur plus de 18 kilomètres autour de Yellowknife (T.N.-O.) tout en transportant un sac de sable de 20 lb!!

Merci à tous ceux qui ont planifié, participé et soutenu une autre année de succès.

🚨 Public Service Announcement | Prospector Challenge 2026 🚨

Joint Task Force (North) will be conducting Prospector Challenge 2026 on Tuesday, June 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. across several locations in Yellowknife, including:
📍 Frame Lake Trail
📍 Niven Subdivision
📍 Old Town

The Prospector Challenge is an annual endurance event bringing together members of the Canadian Armed Forces, RCMP, and Canadian Coast Guard. Teams of two will complete an 18 km route featuring physically and mentally demanding activities such as ruck marching, paddling, portaging, and load carrying—reflecting the realities of northern operations.

The event builds fitness, teamwork, resilience, and operational readiness, helping participants prepare for real-world missions like sovereignty patrols, disaster response, and search and rescue in Canada’s North.

No road closures are expected; however, minor delays may occur, particularly near the Niven Subdivision during portage crossings. Traffic control measures will be in place to minimize disruptions.

We appreciate the community’s patience and support as participants take on this unique northern challenge!

La Force opérationnelle interarmées (Nord) organisera le Prospector Challenge 2026 le mardi 16 juin, de 8 h 30 à 14 h 30, à plusieurs endroits à Yellowknife, notamment :
📍 Sentier Frame Lake
📍 Quartier Niven
📍 Vieux-Yellowknife

Le Prospector Challenge est une épreuve d'endurance annuelle qui rassemble des membres des Forces armées canadiennes, de la GRC et de la Garde côtière canadienne. Des équipes de deux personnes devront parcourir un circuit de 18 km comprenant des épreuves physiquement et mentalement exigeantes, telles que la marche en randonné, le canoë, le portage et le transport de charges, reflétant ainsi les réalités des opérations dans le Nord.

Cet événement permet de développer la condition physique, l'esprit d'équipe, la résilience et la préparation opérationnelle, aidant ainsi les participants à se préparer à des missions réelles telles que les patrouilles de souveraineté, les interventions en cas de catastrophe et les opérations de recherche et de sauvetage dans le Nord canadien.

Aucune fermeture de route n'est prévue ; toutefois, des retards mineurs pourraient survenir, notamment près du quartier Niven lors des traversées à pied. Des mesures de régulation du trafic seront mises en place afin de limiter au maximum les perturbations.

The 54th Arctic Security Working Group has concluded.

Over the past several days, partners from across the North and Canada came together to share information, strengthen relationships, and identify collaborative approaches to northern challenges.

The discussions and connections forged this week will help inform future planning, including OP NANOOK-TATIGIIT, and contribute to a more secure and resilient North.

La 54e réunion du Groupe de travail sur la sécurité dans l'Arctique s'est achevée.

Au cours des derniers jours, des partenaires de l'ensemble du Nord et du Canada se sont réunis pour échanger des informations, renforcer leurs liens et définir des approches collaboratives face aux défis du Nord.

Les discussions et les liens tissés cette semaine permettront d'orienter la planification future, notamment l'opération NANOOK-TATIGIIT, et contribueront à rendre le Nord plus sûr et plus résilient.

The 54th Arctic Security Working Group is underway in Iqaluit.

Led by Joint Task Force (North), this year’s gathering brings together partners from across government, Indigenous organizations, academia, and industry under the theme "Shared Arctic, Shared Responsibility."

Together, participants will explore challenges and opportunities related to emergency management, crisis communications, infrastructure resilience, and youth perspectives in the North.

La 54e réunion du Groupe de travail sur la sécurité dans l'Arctique se tient actuellement à Iqaluit.

Organisée par la Force opérationnelle interarmées (Nord), la réunion de cette année rassemble des partenaires issus de l'ensemble des services gouvernementaux, d'organisations autochtones, du monde universitaire et du secteur privé, autour du thème « Un Arctique partagé, une responsabilité partagée ».

Ensemble, les participants examineront les défis et les opportunités liés à la gestion des urgences, à la communication en situation de crise, à la résilience des infrastructures et au point de vue des jeunes dans le Nord.

New Leadership in the North

Today, command of Joint Task Force (North) was formally transferred from Brigadier-General J.M.Y.D. Riviere to Brigadier-General J.N.M. Parent, during a Change of Command Ceremony.

The ceremony marked an important moment of transition - recognizing the dedication, leadership, and service of BGen Riviere, while welcoming BGen Parent as the new Commander of JTFN.

Operating across Canada’s North demands resilience, strong partnerships, and an unwavering commitment to sovereignty, security, and support to northern communities. Under this new leadership, JTFN will continue working alongside federal, territorial, Indigenous, and international partners to deliver on our mission across the Arctic and Northern regions.

We thank BGen Riviere for his leadership and wish BGen Parent success as he assumes command.

Une nouvelle direction dans le Nord

Aujourd’hui, le commandement de la Force opérationnelle interarmées (Nord) a été officiellement transféré du général de brigade J.M.Y.D. Rivière au général de brigade J.N.M. Parent, lors d’une cérémonie de passation de commandement.

Cette cérémonie a marqué un moment important de transition : elle a permis de rendre hommage au dévouement, au leadership et aux services rendus par le brigadier-général Riviere, tout en souhaitant la bienvenue au brigadier-général Parent en tant que nouveau commandant de la JTFN.

Opérer dans le Nord canadien exige de la résilience, des partenariats solides et un engagement sans faille envers la souveraineté, la sécurité et le soutien aux communautés nordiques. Sous cette nouvelle direction, la JTFN continuera de travailler aux côtés de ses partenaires fédéraux, territoriaux, autochtones et internationaux pour mener à bien sa mission dans l’Arctique et les régions nordiques.

Nous remercions le brigadier-général Rivière pour son leadership et souhaitons au brigadier-général Parent plein succès dans l’exercice de ses nouvelles fonctions.

Over the course of the operation, 1 CRPG operated in more than 17 communities. The Long Range Patrol was only one part of that broader presence.

The North can feel remote and isolated. At times, it is. But the people who call this place home are what make operations possible.

Along the route, Ranger patrols came out to meet fellow Rangers on the land, guide them in, and help move them forward. Doors opened. Meals were shared. Time was taken to listen, connect, and build trust.

Some moments were big. Others seemed small. All of them mattered.

Without the trust of communities, there is no lasting presence. No real freedom of movement. No credible operation in the North.

This is how 1 CRPG operates. Community by community.

Au cours de l’opération, le 1 GPRC a opéré dans plus de 17 communautés. La patrouille de longue portée ne représentait qu’une partie de cette présence plus large.

Le Nord peut sembler éloigné et isolé. Par moments, il l’est. Mais ce sont les gens qui habitent ici qui rendent les opérations possibles.

Tout au long du parcours, des patrouilles de Rangers sont venues à la rencontre de leurs pairs sur le territoire, les ont guidés et ont contribué à les faire avancer. Les portes se sont ouvertes. Les repas ont été partagés. Le temps a été pris pour écouter, créer des liens et bâtir la confiance.

Certains moments étaient grands. D’autres semblaient plus petits. Tous comptaient.

Sans la confiance des communautés, il n’y a pas de présence durable. Pas de réelle liberté de mouvement. Pas d’opération crédible dans le Nord.

Voilà comment le 1 GPRC opère. Communauté par communauté.
