The Hays Code was a set of industry guidelines that regulated the moral content of films in the United States. Enforced between 1934 and 1968, it forbade “immoral” content, including criminality, “sexual perversion”, and nudity.

Some Like It Hot was not granted approval under the Hays Code due to its “sexual perversion” (exploration of gender norms, implied same-sex relationships) and criminality (protagonists having connections to the mob).

Despite the lack of Hays approval, the film went on to experience overwhelming success, and is now considered one of the reasons for the abandonment of the Hays Code in 1968.

Some Like It Hot’s closing line “Well, nobody’s perfect” is ranked one of Hollywood’s Top 100 Film Moments.

However, it was originally only used as a placeholder until the screenwriters could come up with something better. They could not, and we were left with one of the most iconic jokes in film history.
