For many years, we have known Yellowknife’s downtown main strip as Franklin Avenue. Soon, we will welcome a new name: Wıı̀lıı̀deh Avenue.

Wıı̀lıı̀deh, pronounced “Wee-lee-deh,” means “place of Coney Fish.” The name reflects the land, language, and history of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation and helps bring these stories and connections into one of the most visible and frequently used parts of our city.

Join the City of Yellowknife and the YKDFN for the ceremonial unveiling of Wıı̀lıı̀deh Avenue and be part of this important community milestone.

Date: Saturday, June 20, 2026
Time: 2:00 p.m.
Location: 50 Street and 50 Avenue Intersection

Enjoy a drum dance, hear from community leaders, and celebrate the strong relationships that continue to shape our shared community. All are welcome. We hope to see you there.

Thank you for your support! The City of Yellowknife Fire Division would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who came out to our Open House this past Saturday.

We were thrilled to welcome over 400 residents who stopped by to explore the station, meet our crews, and take part in a fun and engaging community event. It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces throughout the day!

A special thank you goes out to our community partners and supporters: the Salvation Army, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Municipal Enforcement Division, Yellowknife Search and Rescue, McDonald’s and everyone else who generously shared their time and helped make this event a success.

We also want to recognize the community for the respectful and positive atmosphere: residents queued patiently, kept the area clean, and looked out for one another throughout the day. Your cooperation helped make the event safe, smooth, and enjoyable for everyone involved.

We’re grateful for the strong community spirit shown once again, and we look forward to welcoming you back next year! 🚒
