Tonight I attended a healthcare town hall hosted by SEIU-West healthcare providers in Craik. It was great to see the local Reeve, MLA, Craik’s Mayor Mark Wegner, residents from the area, and healthcare workers in attendance. I was especially grateful to hear from the CCAs working at the nearby long-term care facility.

We had an honest conversation about the challenges facing rural healthcare: recruiting and retaining workers, declining access to services close to home, poor collaboration from the SHA, and the fact those same CCAs have now gone more than four years without a contract or pay raise.

Some of the stories we heard about long-term care - in speaking with the CCAs after - were heartbreaking, but an important reminder any one of us may come to rely on long-term care.

One older gentleman noted that Craik was the second community in Saskatchewan to implement Medicare, but said he feels like he is watching it die in his own community.

While there are no easy solutions in healthcare, one thing was very clear tonight. This protracted contract negotiation cannot go on. Saskatchewan CCAs currently make a maximum salary that is lower than the starting salary in Alberta. The Sask party government must direct their representative to negotiate a fair contract.

4 years!! This can’t go on. It is permanently hurting our ability to retain caregivers - and the quality of care they’re able to provide.

I had such a great time addressing the Sask Young Ag Conference and spending time there with future leaders at the Western Development Museum today.

My message to young agricultural producers is this — Saskatchewan is your province. This is your future and you get to have a say.
