💧After a summer marked by heatwaves and drought, using water efficiently remains a key challenge, especially in agriculture.

With support from Innosuisse, TerraRad Tech worked with ETH Zurich, WSL and Agroscope to address this challenge by developing and testing a miniaturised microwave sensor. Mounted on a drone, it collects moisture data across fields.

In our interview, Derek Houtz, CEO of TerraRad Tech, explains how the technology works, its potential contribution to more sustainable water use and the challenges that remain.

☀️ Solar power, right between the rails

In Buttes, in the canton of Neuchâtel, Sun-Ways is testing removable solar panels installed directly between the rails of an active railway line.

One year into the pilot, more than 11'000 trains have passed over the installation, while the system has generated more than 16'000 kWh of solar electricity.🚂

The project shows how existing infrastructure could open up new possibilities for renewable energy production, while remaining compatible with railway operations and maintenance.

Supported by Innosuisse, with the contribution of partners including HEIG-VS, BKW, Canton de Neuchâtel, Canton de Vaud, GESTE Engineering, MECCAD, Romande Energie, RM Voie ferrée, Scheuchzer SA, SIG, SNCF, Transports Publics Neuchâtelois SA (transN) and Viteos.

When vegetation becomes part of the building 🌿

That was the idea behind GreenBrick, an innovation project that brought together researchers and construction companies to explore a new approach to greener buildings.

With the support of Innosuisse, Skygardens, Zürcher Ziegeleien, Wagner System AG, Waldhauser+Hermann and Dr. Lüchinger+Meyer Bauingenieure AG collaborated with HSLU Hochschule Luzern and ZHAW Zürcher Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften to develop and test an innovative system that integrates vegetation directly into building components while meeting the technical and practical requirements of the construction industry.
