At HRC63, 🇲🇹 is concerned by deterioration of the human rights of women and girls. The de facto authorities have institutionalised a system of gender-based discrimination with exclusion of women and girls from public life.

Continuing our work at HRC63, during the ID Session with IIM Myanmar, Malta expressed its grave concern on the continued deterioration of the human rights situation in Myanmar. We condemned the ongoing violence perpetrated against civilians and are alarmed by the report’s findings that war crimes and crimes against humanity were committed by multiple parties. The documented use of unlawful detention, sexual and gender-based violence underscores the urgent need for accountability and justice.

On HRC63's first day, Malta and Permanent Mission of Slovenia in Geneva / Stalno predstavništvo RS v Ženevi organised a side-event on the Rights of Older Persons - Public Particiaption and Digital Inclusion. We thank the important Panellists that made an important contribution to the discussion, H.E. Glenn Micallef, EU Commissioner on for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture and Sport, ITU Deputy Secretary General Tomas Lamanauskas, Prof. Dr. Zvezdan Pirtošek, the Independent Expert on the Enjoyment of all human rights by Older Persons, H.E. Dr. Salma Rasheed, Permanent Representative of Maldives to the UN in Geneva, and Ms. Anna Biondi from AGE Platform Europe and member of SPI-CGIL.

The side-event was very well attended.

At the General Debate at the IGWG on OP-CRC, Malta outlined its consistent position in favour of ensuring free pre-primary and secondary education for all children, sharing our own national experience on the benefits of free open education for all.

Humanitarian personnel must be respected and protected. Across conflicts, they continue to face violence, threats, intimidation, detention, access restrictions and other risks while working to reach people in need.

As the IGWG on comes to a close today, the Permanent Mission highly appreciates Dr Yaser Teebi's participation and his important contribution to Malta's work on strengthening the rights of older persons at the international level.

Malta will continue its active participation at this process as part of its work on at UN Geneva and UN Human Rights Council.
