It is with a heavy heart that the GFMD Civil Society Mechanism extends its deepest condolences on the passing of Ambassador Gustavo Gallón, Permanent Representative of Colombia to the United Nations in Geneva and a longstanding defender of human rights.
Ambassador Gallón dedicated his life to the defence of dignity, justice and the rights of those most affected by violence, exclusion and abuse of power. His work marked generations of human rights defenders in Colombia and beyond, and his commitment to truth and accountability remains a source of inspiration for many Colombians and people around the world.
In the context of migration governance, Ambassador Gallón was a valued ally of civil society. Throughout Colombia’s presidency of the 15th Global Forum on Migration and Development - GFMD, he supported, with kindness and determination, the active engagement and inclusion of global civil society. He understood that migration governance must be rooted in human rights, participation and the voices of the communities most affected by policy decisions.
The world has lost one of its strongest advocates for human rights. His legacy will live on in our work, and in the hearts of the people he defended, accompanied and inspired.
The GFMD Civil Society Mechanism extends its deepest condolences to Ambassador Gallón’s family, colleagues, friends, the Government of Colombia, and the many human rights defenders around the world who mourn his passing.
Vuela alto, Embajador Gallón.
