Spotlight Bangladesh at Asian Festival 2026: Wonders of Asia! 🇧🇩

The Permanent Mission of Bangladesh in Geneva brought the vibrant spirit, rich heritage, and authentic flavors of 🇧🇩 at WIPO on 2 September, 2026 for the spectacular “2026 Asian Festival: Wonders of Asia”. Inaugurated by the Director-General of the UN Office at Geneva, this prestigious cultural diplomacy event united 25 countries to showcase the very best of Asian culture, traditions and culinary arts.

Our pavilion was buzzing with energy! We were so proud to celebrate our deep-rooted heritage on this international stage! Bangladesh pavilion captivated global visitors through its timeless cultural traditions and mouthwatering traditional cuisine.

We successfully showcased our:

-Deep cultural heritage: Highlighting traditional arts and historical legacy.

-Culinary diplomacy: Introducing global attendees to authentic Bangladeshi flavors.

Events like these strengthen our international presence, foster cross-cultural understanding, and highlight Bangladesh's vibrant identity globally.

The Permanent Mission of Bangladesh in Geneva welcomed Team Polaris, a team of young Bangladeshi students who became winners of the 13th edition of CERN’s Beamline for Schools (BL4S) competition. Competing against 712 teams from 89 countries, Team Polaris secured its place among the five winning teams alongside teams from the United States, the United Kingdom, Türkiye and India.

The journey of Team Polaris from conducting experiments with limited facilities in Bangladesh to carrying out their experiment at the University of Bonn and CERN, is a remarkable story of talent, perseverance and innovation. Their experiment focused on polysiloxane-based plastic scintillators for high-energy electron beam profiling at the ELSA accelerator of the University of Bonn. The team comprised of students from colleges in Noakhali, Rangpur and Dhaka.

Congratulating the students, Ambassador Nahida Sobhan highlighted their achievement as a powerful testament to the talent, creativity and global potential of Bangladesh’s young generation. She recalled the strong foundation of Bangladesh–CERN cooperation, established in 2012 and strengthened through the 2014 International Cooperation Agreement.

Their achievement is a proud moment for Bangladesh and a powerful reminder that our greatest strength is our people, especially our youth.

Ambassador Nahida Sobhan called on the WTO Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as she concludes her assignment as Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the WTO.

During the meeting, Ambassador Sobhan emphasized on the importance of strengthening the WTO’s Development Division, particularly its work in advancing the interests of developing countries and LDCs. She stressed that leadership of this Division should preferably come from developing countries, particularly from LDCs.

She also called for structural and institutional reforms to be included in the WTO reform agenda.

She also emphasized that capacity-building programmes of the Institute for Training and Technical Cooperation (ITTC) should be inclusive and engage all relevant stakeholders.

Director of the Telecommunication Development Bureau of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Mr. Cosmas Zavazava, met with Ambassador Nahida Sobhan to advance cooperation on Bangladesh’s digital development priorities. Discussions focused on strengthening institutional engagement between Bangladeshi institutions and the ITU, as well as exploring tailored fellowship opportunities to enhance technical expertise and institutional capacity.

Ambassador Nahida Sobhan held a meeting with Ms. Sulyna Abdullah, Chief of the Digital Knowledge Hub of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to explore avenues of cooperation on AI and emerging digital technologies.

The discussion focused on organizing ITU-led workshops and seminars in Dhaka and developing tailored AI learning modules for professionals across sectors. They also discussed about opportunities for Bangladeshi schools and educational institutions to participate in ITU and AI for Good technology and robotics challenges, and nurture the next generation of innovators.

The Permanent Representative of Bangladesh in Geneva H.E. Ambassador Nahida Sobhan held a meeting with the Head of Cross-cutting and Integration Unit of the Department of Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health of the World Health Organization for exploring further collaboration on disability issues. The discussion focused on the possibility of establishing a WHO Collaborating Centre for Disability-Inclusive Health Systems and Rehabilitation in Bangladesh. The objective of the centre will be to serve both national priorities and WHO's global agenda on rehabilitation and health equity and generate lasting benefits for persons with disabilities in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Permanent Mission in Geneva Observes July Mass Uprising Day 2026

The Permanent Mission of Bangladesh in Geneva observed July Mass Uprising Day 2026 with due solemnity and respect at the in-house auditorium of the Mission on 6 August 2026. Members of the Bangladeshi community residing in Switzerland as well as Mission's officials and staff members attended the commemorative programme.

The programme began with the observance of a one-minute silence in honour of the martyrs of the July Mass Uprising. Messages issued on the occasion by the Hon’ble President, the Hon’ble Prime Minister, the Hon’ble Foreign Minister and the Hon’ble State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh were read out by officials of the Mission.

During an open discussion, members of the Bangladeshi community reflected on the historic significance of the July Mass Uprising and shared their perspectives, expectations and aspirations for the future journey of Bangladesh.

In her remarks, Ambassador Nahida Sobhan, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva, paid tribute to the martyrs and expressed heartfelt sympathy for those who sustained injuries during the July Mass Uprising. She underscored the enduring significance of the Day as a meaningful expression of the people’s aspirations for justice, democracy, accountability, and a peaceful and prosperous Bangladesh.

Ambassador Sobhan also expressed appreciation for the role of expatriate Bangladeshis, including members of the Bangladeshi community in Switzerland, whose support and solidarity during the uprising reflected their strong attachment to the country. She encouraged them to continue contributing to Bangladesh’s development through their knowledge, professional expertise, dedication, and constructive engagement.

The programme concluded with a special prayer for the eternal peace of the martyrs and the recovery and well-being of the injured. Some documentary films on the July Mass Uprising were screened at the end of the programme.

জেনেভাস্থ বাংলাদেশ স্থায়ী মিশনে ‘জুলাই গণঅভ্যুত্থান দিবস-২০২৬’ পালিত হয়েছে

জেনেভাস্থ বাংলাদেশ স্থায়ী মিশনের উদ্যোগে গত ৬ আগস্ট ২০২৬ তারিখে মিশনের অডিটোরিয়ামে যথাযোগ্য মর্যাদা ও ভাবগাম্ভীর্যের সঙ্গে ‘জুলাই গণঅভ্যুত্থান দিবস-২০২৬’ পালিত হয় । অনুষ্ঠানে সুইজারল্যান্ডে বসবাসরত বাংলাদেশি কমিউনিটির সদস্যবৃন্দ এবং মিশনের কর্মকর্তা-কর্মচারীবৃন্দ উপস্থিত ছিলেন ।

অনুষ্ঠানের শুরুতে জুলাই-আগস্ট ২০২৪-এর গণঅভ্যুত্থানে আত্মোৎসর্গকারী শহীদদের স্মরণে এক মিনিট নীরবতা পালন করা হয়। পরবর্তীতে দিবসটি উপলক্ষে বাংলাদেশের মহামান্য রাষ্ট্রপতি, মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী, মাননীয় পররাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী এবং মাননীয় পররাষ্ট্র প্রতিমন্ত্রীর প্রদত্ত বাণী মিশনের কর্মকর্তাদের মাধ্যমে পাঠ করা হয়।

অনুষ্ঠানের অংশ হিসেবে অনুষ্ঠিত মুক্ত আলোচনা পর্বে বাংলাদেশি কমিউনিটির সদস্যবৃন্দ জুলাই গণঅভ্যুত্থানের ঐতিহাসিক তাৎপর্য তুলে ধরেন এবং বাংলাদেশের ভবিষ্যৎ অগ্রযাত্রা নিয়ে তাঁদের মতামত, প্রত্যাশা ও আকাঙ্ক্ষা ব্যক্ত করেন।

অনুষ্ঠানে বক্তব্য প্রদানকালে সুইজারল্যান্ডে নিযুক্ত বাংলাদেশের রাষ্ট্রদূত এবং জেনেভাস্থ জাতিসংঘ ও অন্যান্য আন্তর্জাতিক সংস্থাসমূহে বাংলাদেশের স্থায়ী প্রতিনিধি রাষ্ট্রদূত নাহিদা সোবহান জুলাই-আগস্ট ২০২৪-এর গণঅভ্যুত্থানের শহীদদের স্মৃতির প্রতি গভীর শ্রদ্ধা নিবেদন করেন এবং এ আন্দোলনে আহতদের প্রতি আন্তরিক সহমর্মিতা ও সমবেদনা জানান। তিনি ন্যায়বিচার, গণতন্ত্র, জবাবদিহিতা এবং শান্তিপূর্ণ ও সমৃদ্ধ বাংলাদেশের প্রত্যাশার প্রতিফলন হিসেবে জুলাই গণঅভ্যুত্থান দিবসের ঐতিহাসিক ও তাৎপর্যপূর্ণ গুরুত্ব তুলে ধরেন।

রাষ্ট্রদূত নাহিদা সোবহান জুলাই গণঅভ্যুত্থানে প্রবাসী বাংলাদেশিদের, বিশেষ করে সুইজারল্যান্ডে বসবাসরত বাংলাদেশি কমিউনিটির গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অবদানের কথাও কৃতজ্ঞতার সঙ্গে উল্লেখ করেন। গণঅভ্যুত্থানের সময় তাঁদের সমর্থন, সংহতি ও সক্রিয় অংশগ্রহণ বাংলাদেশের প্রতি তাঁদের গভীর মমত্ববোধ ও অঙ্গীকারের বহিঃপ্রকাশ বলে তিনি উল্লেখ করেন। তিনি প্রবাসী বাংলাদেশিদের জ্ঞান, পেশাগত দক্ষতা, কঠোর পরিশ্রম, নিষ্ঠা ও গঠনমূলক সম্পৃক্ততার মাধ্যমে বাংলাদেশের উন্নয়নে অব্যাহতভাবে অবদান রাখার আহ্বান জানান।

অনুষ্ঠানের শেষ পর্যায়ে জুলাই-আগস্ট ২০২৪-এর গণঅভ্যুত্থানে শহীদদের আত্মার মাগফিরাত এবং আহতদের দ্রুত আরোগ্য, সুস্বাস্থ্য ও সার্বিক কল্যাণ কামনা করে বিশেষ দোয়া অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। পরবর্তীতে জুলাই গণঅভ্যুত্থানের বিভিন্ন দিক ও তাৎপর্য তুলে ধরে নির্মিত কয়েকটি প্রামাণ্যচিত্র প্রদর্শন করা হয়।

Today, on the International Day of Awareness of the Special Development Needs and Challenges of Landlocked Developing Countries, we recognize the resilience and potential of the world’s 32 landlocked developing countries.

Established by the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution A/RES/79/320, this observance, held annually on 6 August, highlights the unique challenges faced by landlocked developing countries and the importance of international cooperation in addressing them.

Together, let’s strengthen partnerships, improve connectivity, and support sustainable development so that no country is left behind.
