France and Spain are facing some of the worst wildfires in recent history. In Southwestern France, intense wildfires have generated 'fire clouds', scientifically named pyrocumulonimbus clouds—thunderstorm clouds (cumulonimbus) produced by the intense heat of a fire (pyro).

How does a pyrocumulonimbus form?

A pyrocumulonimbus forms through the same process as a thunderstorm cloud, except that it generally produces little or no precipitation. It is formed when extreme heat from wildfire or volcanic eruption forces large amounts of smoke and hot air to rise rapidly. As it reaches higher altitudes, low atmospheric pressure causes the air to expand and cool, and the moisture condenses into a cloud.

Pyrocumulus can be described by its bulging, cauliflower-like top with towers sprouting upward. Pyrocumulonimbus, like this one that formed over France, is more powerful than pyrocumulus.

Fire clouds are signs of extreme weather and heat conditions and can make already dangerous wildfires even harder to predict and contain.

Some are hopeful – the warmth of the sun after a stretch of cold days, or the first rain shower after days of scorching heat. Some are difficult - long hours of work on the fields under the sun. Both belong in this year's competition, 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐖𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫, 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝.

For two weeks, Typhoon Bavi—a large and powerful typhoon—tracked across Western Pacific, bringing destructive winds, torrential rain, and widespread damage and loss of life.

At its peak intensity, Typhoon Bavi brought winds of 290 kilometers (180 miles) per hour, along with torrential rain and dangerous storm surge to the Pacific islands, according to NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration

Satellite technology allows us to visualize the scale and intensity of tropical cyclones and is a powerful tool for forecasting and early warning. El Niño is predicted by monitoring conditions in the tropical Pacific Ocean and using climate models to estimate how they might evolve over the coming months.

Monitoring relies on a global network of observations, including satellites, ocean buoys, research ships and atmospheric measurements operated by National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) and international partners. These forecasts draw on observations of sea-surface temperatures, winds, rainfall, air pressure and ocean heat content.

Seasonal forecast models today can predict climate patterns one to six months in advance. One of the main tools used to track ENSO events is the Oceanic Niño Index (ONI) which measures whether sea-surface temperatures in a key area of the equatorial Pacific are warmer or cooler than their long-term average over a three-month period. Warmer-than-average conditions point to El Niño, while cooler-than-average conditions point to La Niña.

In a warming climate, scientists are also looking at the Relative Oceanic Niño Index (RONI). It measures how warm or cool the equatorial Pacific is compared to the rest of the tropics at the same time. This helps separate ENSO conditions from the broader warming of the global ocean.
