When wildfire smoke is inhaled, it triggers body-wide inflammation and oxidative stress, which weakens the lungsโ€™ ability to filter foreign particles.

A study cited in the WMO Air Quality and Climate Bulletin links wildfire smoke exposure to an increase in asthma attacks, hospitalization from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and use of respiratory medication. It is also linked to have negative effects on mental health and birth outcomes.

Pacific island countries and territories are coming together to build a weather-ready Blue Pacific ๐Ÿ๏ธ

Across the Pacific, growing risks from extreme weather, climate change and water-related hazards are placing increasing pressure on communities, ecosystems and economies.

The Pacific Meteorological Council, in partnership with WMO and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme - SPREP, is meeting for its 8th session (PMC-8) in Nuku'alofa, Tonga. Meteorological leaders and partners from 26 Pacific Island Countries and Territories convene to strengthen the weather, climate and hydrological services people rely on to anticipate hazards, prepare and act.

The council is focusing on the Pacific Islands Meteorological Strategy 2027โ€“2036, which will help set the direction for the region's weather, climate, water and ocean services over the next decade.

A weather-ready Pacific not only means having robust forecasting and warning systems and infrastructure, but also having the capacity, skills, partnerships and long-term support needed to keep services working.

Being weather-ready also means making sure that reliable, actionable information reaches people in time, so that they can make decisions that protect lives, livelihoods and development.

PMC-8 will inform the Fourth Pacific Meteorological Ministers Meeting next week, where Pacific ministers will consider priorities and provide high-level direction for the region's next steps.

The powerful 2023/2024 El Niรฑo contributed to 2024 being the warmest year on record. We should not be surprised if this record is broken. The intensifying El Niรฑo will deliver a major blow to communities, economies and supply chains worldwide.

But its effects vary according to location and season, and can be modified by other climate drivers like the conditions in the Indian and Atlantic Oceans.

Sea surface temperatures across the central-eastern equatorial Pacific (Niรฑo 3.4 region)โ€” the region at the heart of El Niรฑoโ€”are already well above average and are continuing to rise.

The widely used Niรฑo 3.4 index which measures sea surface temperature anomalies in the region has shown this development:
๐ŸŸก May-July 2026: +1.5 ยฐC above normal
๐ŸŸ  July 2026: +2.0 ยฐC above normal
๐Ÿ”ด Late July to mid-August 2026: +2.2 ยฐC to +2.6 ยฐC above average (weekly values)

Underwater, temperatures were even warmer, reaching more than 8ยฐC above average during July and early August in some areas.

Multi-model ensemble forecasts indicate that stronger El Niรฑo conditions will further strengthen, with sea surface temperature anomalies in the Niรฑo 3.4 region expected to reach approximately +3.6ยฐC. It is expected to peak in November-December 2026.

A positive phase of the Indian Ocean Dipole is also expected to develop, reaching a mean value of 0.9ยฐC during September- November 2026. Meanwhile, the equatorial Atlantic basin is forecast to remain generally warm with above normal sea surface temperatures. These conditions may reinforce, weaken or alter typical El Niรฑo impacts in different regions.

However, the strength of an El Niรฑo event alone does not determine how severe its impacts will be in any individual country or region. Its effects vary according to location and season and can be modified by other climate drivers, including conditions in the Indian and Atlantic Oceans.

๐ŸŒง๏ธ Rainfall patterns show a pronounced and classic atmospheric response to the strong Pacific El Niรฑo: wetter conditions in some regions & drought risk in others.

๐ŸŒŠ A positive phase of the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is also expected to develop, reaching a September-October-November 2026 seasonal mean value of 0.9ยฐC. Meanwhile, the equatorial Atlantic basin is forecast to remain generally warm, with SSTs in both the North and South Tropical Atlantic staying above normal. These conditions may reinforce, weaken or alter typical El Niรฑo impacts in different regions.

Because El Niรฑo can reshape weather and climate patterns thousands of kilometres away from the tropical Pacific, reliable forecasts provide governments, humanitarian agencies, businesses and communities with valuable time to prepare.

Wildfires in Sumatra and Kalimantan, Indonesia, have burned more than 100,000 acres of land. Just days ahead of , observations show that smoke from the fires has traveled much further, crossing borders to neighbouring countries such as Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines.

Wildfire smoke contains particulate matter and harmful gases that can seriously affect our health. As smoke spreads, air quality can quickly reach hazardous levels, increasing the risk of respiratory problems.

Monitoring fires, forecasting whe re smoke will travel, and issuing timely warnings can help authorities take appropriate measures to protect public health and enable people to reduce their exposure to polluted air.

Thereโ€™s nearly no doubt that the intensifying El Niรฑo will persist through February 2027.

Forecasts from WMOโ€™s Global Producing Centres show that El Nino is expected to continue intensifying into a very strong event in the coming months, peaking towards the end of 2026.

El Niรฑo impacts โ€“ including on global temperatures and rainfall patterns โ€“ will be felt well into 2027.

The risks of floods, droughts and extreme weather may multiply and cascade as El Niรฑo becomes stronger.
