SANTIAGO, 11 May — As part of its activities to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Chile, the Philippine Embassy in Chile organized a virtual academic lecture entitled, “Se le conjuga en dos tiempos (Conjugated in Two Tenses): Spectral comparisons between José Rizal and Gabriela Mistral”, featuring the research works of Dr. Christian Benitez of Ateneo de Manila University and Dr. Alicia Noemi Salomone of Universidad de Chile.

The event also served to commemorate two major events: the conclusion of National Literature Month in April and the commencement of National Heritage Month in May.

Distinguished academics Dr. Benitez from the Philippines and Dr. Salomone from Chile presented selected works of Philippine national hero José Rizal and Chilean Nobel Laureate Gabriela Mistral. They shared their perspectives on the relevance of the legacy of Rizal and Mistral in contemporary literary and cultural discourse.

The webinar also explored the intellectual, historical, and cultural milieus in which literary titans Rizal and Mistral existed and which shaped their worldview. The webinar delved into how Rizal and Mistral, despite living in different eras and hemispheres, both used their writings to challenge the status quo and advocate social justice.

Insights from the participants likewise examined how Rizal and Mistral continue to shape conversations on nationalism, education, memory, and identity across cultures and generations.

“I was impressed with the depth of the questions from the participants and the engaging sharing of insights from the two resource persons, who have allowed us to look at Rizal and Mistral through a new lens,” said Ambassador Vinzon-Balatbat.

SANTIAGO, 11 de mayo — Como parte de sus actividades para conmemorar el 80º aniversario del establecimiento de relaciones diplomáticas entre Filipinas y Chile, la Embajada de Filipinas en Chile organizó una conferencia académica virtual titulada “Conjugado en dos tiempos”: Comparaciones espectrales entre José Rizal y Gabriela Mistral”, en la que se presentaron los trabajos de investigación del Dr. Christian Benítez, de la Universidad del Ateneo de Manila, y de la Dra. Alicia Noemi Salomone, de la Universidad de Chile.

El evento también sirvió para conmemorar dos acontecimientos importantes: la clausura del Mes Nacional de la Literatura en abril y el inicio del Mes Nacional del Patrimonio en mayo.

Los distinguidos académicos Dr. Benítez, de Filipinas, y la Dra. Salomone, de Chile, presentaron una selección de obras del héroe nacional filipino José Rizal y de la Premio Nobel chilena Gabriela Mistral. Compartieron sus puntos de vista sobre la relevancia del legado de Rizal y Mistral en el discurso literario y cultural contemporáneo.

El seminario web también analizó los entornos intelectuales, históricos y culturales en los que vivieron los gigantes de la literatura Rizal y Mistral y que moldearon su visión del mundo. El seminario web profundizó en cómo Rizal y Mistral, a pesar de vivir en épocas y hemisferios diferentes, utilizaron sus escritos para cuestionar el statu quo y defender la justicia social.

Las reflexiones de los participantes también analizaron cómo Rizal y Mistral siguen marcando el debate sobre el nacionalismo, la educación, la memoria y la identidad en diferentes culturas y generaciones.

«Me impresionó la profundidad de las preguntas de los participantes y el interesante intercambio de ideas de los dos ponentes, quienes nos han permitido ver a Rizal y Mistral desde una nueva perspectiva», afirmó la embajadora Vinzon-Balatbat.

SANTIAGO, 9 MAY – In celebration of Labor Day and as part of the Embassy’s activities to empower overseas Filipinos in Chile, the Philippine Embassy organized a hybrid seminar featuring Chile’s Servicio de Impuestos Internos (SII or Internal Revenue Service).

The seminar aimed to provide overseas Filipinos in Chile with essential information on setting up a business in Chile and complying with the requirements set by Chilean tax authorities.

The SII is the primary government agency of Chile that oversees Chile’s tax regime. It is a public office under the Ministry of Finance and is responsible for enforcing and administering domestic taxes in Chile.

“May mga regulasyon at batas Chileno na kailangan masundan na nagmamandato ng tamang proseso at lugar para magbenta, mag-negosyo, at maghanapbuhay ang ating mga kababayan…Layunin ng aktibidad na ito na tulungan kayo maunawaan ang mga pangunahing proseso (There are Chilean regulations and laws that must be followed, mandating the proper process and place for our fellow Filipinos to sell, do business, and make a living…The purpose of this activity is to help you understand the processes that will allow you to operate your businesses in Chile),” said Ambassador Vinzon-Balatbat.

Speaking through the Embassy’s interpreter, Ms. Karina Muñoz, head of the Information and Taxpayer Assistance Department of the SII Santiago East Regional Office, provided an overview of the categories of taxes and how to register, obtain, and use the so-called Tax ID through SII’s services.

Members of the Filipino Community had an opportunity to raise their concerns with the SII resource persons during the Q and A session, and consult the SII directly after the presentation.

The Embassy likewise provided consular consultation and overseas voters registration services to members of the Filipino community after the hybrid seminar.

The SII seminar is also part of the Embassy’s activities to help foster awareness on Filipino workers' rights and their corresponding obligations as workers and residents in Chile. – END

SANTIAGO, 9 DE MAYO - Con motivo de la celebración del Día del Trabajo y como parte de las actividades de la Embajada destinadas a empoderar a los filipinos residentes en Chile, la Embajada de Filipinas organizó un seminario híbrido en el que participó el Servicio de Impuestos Internos (SII) de Chile.

El seminario tenía como objetivo proporcionar a los filipinos residentes en Chile información esencial sobre cómo crear una empresa en Chile y cumplir con los requisitos establecidos por las autoridades fiscales chilenas.

La SII es el principal organismo gubernamental de Chile encargado de supervisar el régimen tributario del país. Es una entidad pública dependiente del Ministerio de Hacienda y se encarga de la aplicación y la administración de los impuestos nacionales en Chile.

“May mga regulasyon at batas Chileno na kailangan masundan na nagmamandato ng tamang proseso at lugar para magbenta, mag-negosyo, at maghanapbuhay ang ating mga kababayan…Layunin ng aktibidad na ito na tulungan kayo maunawaan ang mga pangunahing proseso (Existen regulaciones y leyes chilenas que deben cumplirse, las cuales establecen el proceso y el lugar adecuados para que nuestros compatriotas vendan, hagan negocios y se ganen la vida… El objetivo de esta actividad es ayudarles a comprender los procesos que les permitirán operar sus negocios en Chile)”, dijo la Embajadora Vinzon-Balatbat.

A través de la intérprete de la embajada, la Sra. Karina Muñoz, jefa del Departamento de Información y Asistencia al Contribuyente de la Oficina Regional del SII en Santiago Este, ofreció una visión general de las categorías de impuestos y de cómo registrarse, obtener y utilizar el denominado número de identificación tributario a través de los servicios del SII.

Los miembros de la comunidad filipina tuvieron la oportunidad de plantear sus inquietudes a los expertos del SII durante la sesión de preguntas y respuestas, y de consultar directamente con el SII tras la presentación.

Asimismo, la Embajada ofreció servicios de atención consular y de inscripción de votantes en el extranjero a los miembros de la comunidad filipina tras el seminario híbrido.

El seminario del SII también forma parte de las actividades de la Embajada destinadas a fomentar la concienciación sobre los derechos de los trabajadores filipinos y sus correspondientes obligaciones como trabajadores y residentes en Chile. – FIN

SANTIAGO, CHILE – The Philippine Embassy in Santiago showed Chilean culinary students, professional chefs from selected Embassies, and other guests the know-how for preparing three Filipino dishes in celebration of Filipino Food Month on 28 April 2026.

The event, entitled “Cocinar con Concharón y Corazon: Una Clase Magistral del Chef Filipino Miguel Paolo Damatac” was held at Universidad Finis Terrae (UFT). Taking center stage was Chef Miguel, who showcased Kare-kare with Bagoong, Ginataang Bilo-bilo, and Sago’t Gulaman.

Ambassador Celeste Vinzon-Balatbat, in her opening remarks, highlighted that the demonstration was also the Philippine Embassy’s kick off event to launch its series of activities commemorating the 80th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between the Philippines and Chile in 2026.

“A pesar de nuestra distancia física y, tal vez, de la barrera idiomática, podemos construir puentes de entendimiento entre nuestros pueblos a través del idioma universal de la comida (Notwithstanding our physical distance and perhaps our language barrier, we can build bridges of understanding between our peoples through the universal language of the kitchen),” said Ambassador Balatbat.

She underscored how gastronomy is capable of helping build bridges between peoples and nations. “Es un recordatorio de que Filipinas tiene influencias culinarias de parte de nuestros vecinos asiáticos, de Oriente y Occidente, a través de nuestra herencia española.” (Through this activity, the Philippine Embassy is proud to showcase to Chile the rich culinary influences that shape Filipino cuisine today) she added.

As part of the kick-off event, the Embassy also formally launched the official logo designed by Filipina artist Ariane Bobillo and commissioned by the Philippine Embassy in Chile to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the Philippines-Chile diplomatic relations.

The logo integrates the national colors and symbols of both countries and represents unity, hope, resilience, progress, and enduring friendship across the Pacific.

The culinary event was warmly received by students, faculty members, professional chefs, members of the diplomatic corps, and other invited guests.

The event also marked the first time a Southeast Asian country conducted a culinary masterclass at UFT, making the occasion more meaningful for the Embassy’s commemoration.

Aside from personally experiencing Chef Miguel’s culinary creations, the audience was invited to sample the delicacies and personally experience the diversity and richness of Filipino culinary tradition.

The event enabled members of the audience to ask about the food, ranging from the preparation process to where they could source the ingredients locally.

Prior to the program proper of the culinary presentation, the Embassy featured tourism videos from the Department of Tourism (DOT) showcasing Philippine destinations and culture.

For many students in attendance, it was their first introduction to the Philippines and its tourism offerings, contributing to greater cultural awareness and interest in the country. -END

APRIL 2026, ANTOFAGASTA - In a world where rising fuel prices and climate change dominate the news, the Philippine Embassy in Santiago is currently exploring ways to increase the renewable energy basket of the Philippines. An Embassy team met with representatives of Generadora Metropolitana Solar Farm on 22 April 2026 and Colbun S.A., operators of Horizonte wind farm, on 23 April 2026.

Located in the Antofagasta region, both companies have been contributing significantly to Chile’s energy security. Utilizing modern technology and deploying sustainable business models, both companies are also expanding their capacities and energy outputs balancing environmental, ecological concerns with the needs of Chile's populations.

Emphasizing the need to shift from fossil fuels to renewables, the Philippine Embassy has proposed to the companies the possibility of considering the Philippines when expanding their operations abroad.

The Philippine Embassy is currently planning to connect prominent players in Chile’s renewable energy market with the PHL’s Department of Energy to contribute to the efforts by Philippine energy officials to achieve the renewable energy target ratio of 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2040 as laid out in the country’s 2023-2050 Power Development Plan (PDP) – END

ABRIL DE 2026, ANTOFAGASTA - En un mundo en que el alza de los precios de los combustibles y el cambio climático dominan las noticias, la Embajada de Filipinas en Santiago estudia formas de aumentar la canasta de energías renovables de Filipinas. Un equipo de la Embajada se reunió con representantes de Generadora Metropolitana Solar Farm el 22 de abril de 2026 y los operadores de Colbun S.A. del Parque Eólico, on 23 April 2026.

Ubicadas en la region de Antofagasta, ambas empresas han contribuido significativamente a la seguridad energética de Chile. Con tecnología Usando tecnologías modernas y la implementación de modelos de negocio sostenibles, ambas empresas están ampliando además su capacidad y su producción energética, equilibrando la preocupación por el medioambiente y la ecología con las necesidades de la población de Chile.

Haciendo hincapié en la necesidad de hacer la transición de los combustibles fósiles a las energías renovables, la Embajada de Filipinas ha propuesto a las empresas la posibilidad de considerar a Filipinas a la hora de ampliar sus peraciones en el extranjero.

La Embajada de Filipinas tiene la intención de poner en contacto a las empresas más importantes en el Mercado de las energías renovables de Chile con el Departamento de Energía de Filipinas para contribuir a los esfuerzos de las autoridades energéticas
de Filipinas para alcanzar los objetivos de energías renovables de un 35% para el año 2030 a un 50% para el año 2040 como está estipulado en el Plan de Desarrollo Energético (PDP por su nombre en inglés) de 2023-2050 del país.– FIN
