LITTLE HISTORY:
The Municipality of Ambam is part of the Ntem Valley Department, South Cameroon Region. The Mixed Rural Municipality of Ambam was created by decree N ° 523 of August 21, 1952. It became Rural Municipality of Ambam under the law N ° 74/23 of December 05, 1974 and then Municipality of Ambam with the Law No. 2004/018 of July 22, 2004.
Chief town of the Ntem Valley Department (created on September 1, 1992), the town of Ambam takes its name from a German camp established in Yem, the current site of the Protestant mission in Nkolambam. In Ntoumou language, camp is called "Mbama". Unable to pronounce the word "Mbama", the German settlers preferred to bring the final "a" to the beginning of the word and "Mbama" became "Ambam". The city of Ambam was created by Lieutenant ZIMMERMAN, commander of the aforementioned camp and known as SIMA EMAN by the local populations.
The Ambam city council shares the territorial space of the sub-division of the same name which was created as a subdivision in 1921. It is made up of 77 villages and has an area of 2,798 km².
According to statistics from the 3rd General Population and Housing Census carried out in 2005, the population of the Municipality of Ambam is estimated at 41,089 souls, including 21,410 men and 19,679 women. This population is distributed between the urban (16,060 inhabitants) and rural (25,029 inhabitants) areas of the municipality.
The average population density is 14.7 inhabitants. / Km², against 13.4 inhab. / Km² for the South Region and 37.5 inhab. / Km² for the whole of Cameroon.
