CAMEROON: IN 2016 SUPERMONT SNATCHED LEADERSHIP FROM TANGUI IN MINERAL WATER MARKET

(Business in Cameroon) - After decades of leadership in the Cameroonian market, the mineral water label Source Tangui, produced by the company Société des Eaux Minérales du Cameroun (SEMC), listed on the Douala stock exchange and controlled by the brewery Société Anonyme des Brasseries du Cameroun (SABC), has just been replaced by the label Supermont, produced by the company Source du Pays.
"The competition Source du Pays, with the label Supermont, is henceforth leader in the bottled water market. Supermont represents about 52% of market share against 36% for SABC", reveals the Cameroonian subsidiary of the Castel group in its 2016 activities report.
Indeed, after an absence of some years, Supermont mineral water, returned to the Cameroonian market, later, with a more aggressive strategy, which consisted in democratising mineral water in the country, thanks to packaging 10 liters, sold at FCfa 1,500, against FCfa 2,400 for the traditional pallet of six bottles of 1.5 liters. This aggressiveness provoked, with the competition, not only a levelling down of prices, but also the adoption by all the operators of this packaging of 10 liters, which had the immediate consequence of increasing the consumption of mineral water in the country. Evidence of this, according to SABC activities report, "the overall market of bottled water in 2016 is estimated at more than 2,200,000 hl, rapidly growing compared to 2015 (+32.6%)".

The "plastic rice" looks very realistic
Nigeria has confiscated 2.5 tonnes of "plastic rice" smuggled into the country by unscrupulous businessmen, the customs service says.
Lagos customs chief Haruna Mamudu said the fake rice was intended to be sold in markets during the festive season.
He said the rice was very sticky after it was boiled and "only God knows what would have happened" if people ate it.
It is not clear where the seized sacks came from but rice made from plastic pellets was found in China last year.
Rice is the most popular staple food in Nigeria.
The BBC's Peter Okwoche says it is the only foodstuff that crosses cultural and ethnic lines across the country.
No ordinary rice: Martin Patience, BBC News, Lagos
Whoever made this fake rice did an exceptionally good job - on first impression it would have fooled me. When I ran the grains through my fingers nothing felt out of the ordinary.
But when I smelt a handful of the "rice" there was a faint chemical odour. Customs officials say when they cooked up the rice it was too sticky - and it was then abundantly clear this was no ordinary batch.
They've sent a sample to the laboratories to determine exactly what the "rice" is made of.
They are also warning the public not to consume the mystery foodstuff as it could be dangerous.
Fake food scandals are thankfully rare in Nigeria when you compare it to countries such as China.
The big scandal here is fake pharmaceutical drugs that kill a huge number of people every year.
A total of 102 sacks, each containing 25kg (55lb), was seized.
Each bag contained 25kg (55lb) of fake rice
Investigations are under way to establish how much of the contraband has already been sold.
The customs official called on "economic saboteurs who see yuletide season as a peak period for their nefarious acts to desist from such illegal" business activity.
Mr Mamudu did not explain how the plastic rice was made but said it had been branded as "Best Tomato Rice".

DRINK COCA COLA, VERY DANGEROUS FOR HEALTH!
(this is an online translated document. original version is in French. see the link below)

Coca cola is a dangerous drink for the body. You save your health if you avoid drinking coca cola because the coca cola at the base is not made for drinking. It is simply a cleaning product for housewives and others ... In many US states, rail patrols load two coca cola stripes into their luggage carrier to clean the blood on the road after an accident.

Other experiments to do:
• If a bone is placed in a container with coca cola, the bone will dissolve in two days.
• To clean the toilet, pour a can of coca cola and let it rest; Then pull the flush.
• Coca cola citric acid removes stains from the dishes.
• Pour a can of coca cola into the washing machine with the spotted fabrics and add the laundry.

The active ingredient in coca cola is phosphoric acid. Its PH is 2.8 and dissolves a nail in about four days ... it is advisable to never wash your teeth after drinking the coca cola that removes the enamel forever.

NAME RECYCLING STARTS PLASTIC WASTE RECYCLING PLANT IN THE CAMEROONIAN CAPITAL

(Business in Cameroon) - Plastic waste and packaging produced by households and companies in the city of Yaoundé, the Cameroonian capital, will now be collected and recycled into reusable products by the company Name Recycling.

The company who just started operations in the Ahala neighbourhood, in the suburbs of the capital, already managed to make plastic waste disappear from Limbé, a town located in the South-West region, where Name Recycling recently opened its very first recycling unit, we officially learned.

Plastic waste is a real environmental problem in Cameroon, due to the lack of recycling units for the 600,000 tons of waste in this category produced on a yearly basis by companies and households.

Though banned in Cameroon since 2006, frozen chickens are making a comeback

(Business in Cameroon) - The scarcity of broiler chicken on the Cameroonian market for some weeks now, direct consequence of the bird flu epizooty which broke out in May 2016, then resisted until the beginning of this year 2017 in the main production area of the country (Western region), gave ideas to some economic operators.
Taking advantage of the porous borders with neighbouring countries such as Gabon, Nigeria, Chad or Equatorial Guinea, those operators managed, with the assistance of some customs officers, we learned, to import cargoes of frozen chicken in the Cameroonian market.
In Yaoundé, the capital, these products banned since 2006 are nevertheless for sale in markets, particularly fishmongers. Prices for this food products vary between FCfa 1,800 and 2,000 per kilogram, against FCfa 4,500 to 6,000 for a live chicken of 2.5 kg.
As a reminder, operators in the Cameroonian poultry sector estimate at FCfa 16 billion the losses caused by the last bird flu epizooty, which resulted in the destruction of important cargo of layers and eggs, making it difficult for farmers to access their main raw material, one-day chicks.
