Development in most regions over the last 50 years has led to an increase in life expectancy which has further led to a rapid change in the demographics of populations around the world. Studies predict that by 2050, the world’s population aged 60 years and older is expected to total 2 billion, up from 900 million in 2015.
The trend of an ageing society is a blessing and a cause of celebration, but at the same time also presents several challenges both for the older people and for the society. The W.H.O studies reveal that most people above the age of 60 years face age related losses in hearing, seeing and moving. Some older persons also go through conditions like disability, dementia, heart disease, chronic heart disease, musculoskeletal conditions, diabetes etc.
In our efforts to help the ageing population in the Southwest Region of Cameroon, the Center of Medical Welfare (COMWEL) Elderly, Destitute, Care; is committed in supplying elderly support services to senior citizens in hard to reach areas of southwest Cameroon. These services are to ensure that the senior citizens in hard to reach rural settings get proper health care, support and also get suitable opportunities for their overall well-being.
It is in this respect that Center of Medical Welfare (COMWEL) Elderly, Destitute, Care carried out free consultations and screening of the elderly in Mondoni village for blood/sugar, hemoglobin, blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases including treatment and follow-up.
