We are pleased to announce that Dr. Forgu Esemu Livo, researcher at IMPM's CREMER (Centre for Research on Emerging and Re-emerging Diseases), is one of the 13 fellows in the inaugural 2026 cohort of the Career Advancement Fellows, a program supported by the Science for Africa Foundation.

As part of the Sub-Saharan African Network for TB/HIV Research Excellence (SANTHE 2.0), his work focuses on how HIV persists in the body, a key step toward cure solutions tailored to African populations.

"Biostatistics doesn't give you the Truth, it gives you the probability of being right"

Dr. Ebogo Belobo Jean Thierry, Research Officer at CRSPP/IMPM, spoke at a scientific seminar held at IMPM on Tuesday, July 14th, 2026. His presentation was titled "Biostatistics in the Service of Biomedical Research"

He began by explaining why statistics have become essential in medical research today: with increasingly large and complex datasets, it's easy to draw the wrong conclusions if the analysis isn't rigorous. A single figure is never enough - one must always look at the variability in the data, meaning how much results differ from one patient to another.

He emphasized a point that is often misunderstood: a statistically "significant" result doesn't necessarily mean it's important in practice. He gave a striking example: across 10,000 patients, a tiny difference - barely noticeable for any individual patient - can appear "significant" simply because the sample is very large. Conversely, with only 10 patients, a huge difference might not reach significance, simply because the sample is too small. In other words: a statistically strong result isn't always a clinically useful one, and a "non-significant" result isn't always proof that there's no effect.

He also recalled a simple but often overlooked rule: always look at your data visually before running a statistical test. He showed that very different datasets can produce exactly the same averages - the only way to catch this is to visualize the data, not just summarize it with numbers.

He closed his presentation with a few simple habits to adopt before drawing conclusions from a study: check that the sample is truly representative, look at the data before testing it, and never rely on a single number alone to validate or reject a result.

Dr. Ebogo Belobo concluded with this message: "Biostatistics doesn't give you the Truth. It gives you the probability of being right." A good researcher, he reminded the audience, is not one who is always right - but one who knows how to measure their own doubts.

He is among the researchers recently trained by IMPM's IBHI-Lab as part of the SRG-MERCK-IMPM project cohort, which aims to strengthen bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, and advanced biostatistics for the cost-effective deployment of new tools to fight schistosomiasis.

"Bioinformatics turns complexity into clarity, and clarity into solutions for global health"

Dr. Mbah Ntepe Leonel, Researcher Officer at CRSPP/IMPM, spoke at the scientific seminar held at IMPM on Tuesday, July 14th, 2026. His presentation focused on transcriptomics - a field that studies all the genes active in a cell at a given moment - and its potential for identifying new medical diagnostic markers.

Dr. Mbah Ntepe began by highlighting a challenge shared by many Cameroonian researchers: due to a lack of local bioinformatics expertise, samples are often sent abroad for sequencing, and the results that come back remain raw, without in-depth analysis. He therefore called for strengthening local skills in genomic data analysis, a key issue for the country's scientific autonomy.

He then presented his research on schistosomiasis (also known as bilharzia), a parasitic disease still widespread in Cameroon. The goal: to identify, among thousands of genes, those whose activity changes in infected individuals or in those suffering from liver fibrosis - a common complication of the disease. After rigorous data filtering, two genes stood out: whose expression varies markedly depending on patients' infection status.

The researcher then focused on one of them , tested as a potential diagnostic marker. The results are particularly encouraging in boys: the test correctly distinguished infected from non-infected children in nearly 9 out of 10 cases within this group - a finding that paves the way for simpler, faster diagnostic tools for this disease.

He concluded by noting that these genes also appear to be linked to changes in the body's metabolism, particularly in boys, which could eventually shed light on how the disease progresses differently depending on s*x.

Adamou Velhima, Research Officer at IMPM, on scientific mission in Slovakia and the Czech Republic 😊🌟

Under a mobility grant from the Slovak government (SAIA Agency), Adamou Velhima, Research Officer at IMPM, [IBHI-Lab], carried out a scientific stay in Slovakia and the Czech Republic from February 1st to April 30 2026, focused on cutting-edge genomics technologies applied to the fight against tuberculosis.

At the laboratory of Dr. Matúš Dohál at the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine of Comenius University in Martin and under and under the supervision of Dr. Dohál and Prof. Juraj Mokrý, he worked on Whole Genome Sequencing of Mycobacterium bovis isolates collected in Cameroon, with the aim of identifying the genetic diversity of these strains and their transmission routes.
Scientific visits to the National Institute of Public Health of the Czech Republic provided an opportunity to explore collaboration avenues in next-generation sequencing (NGS), advanced molecular biology techniques, antibiotic resistance, and epidemiological surveillance.

"We cannot fully understand the transmission of diseases such as tuberculosis without the tools of modern genomics. These technologies provide precise information on bacteria and allow for more effective control strategies," states Adamou Velhima.

Bovine tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium bovis is a public health concern in Central Africa, due to its transmissibility to humans through contact with animals or the consumption of unpasteurized dairy products. In Cameroon, the genetic diversity of these strains and their transmission pathways remain insufficiently documented to date, which hampers the implementation of targeted control strategies.

📣 IMPM UPDATES | Restitution of the SRG-MERCK Schistosomiasis Small Grant Project on Artificial Intelligence at IMPM

The Institute of Medical Research and Medicinal Plants Studies (IMPM) will hold the closing ceremony of the SRG-MERCK-IMPM Project "Building Bioinformatics, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning and Advanced Biostatistics Capacity for Cost-Effective Translation of Novel Control Tools Against Schistosomiasis" on June 9, 2026, at IMPM, Yaoundé.

This event will bring together local executives and stakeholders and will officially mark the end of the activities carried out under this international scientific partnership and provide an opportunity to share achievements, exchange experiences, and showcase the results obtained, particularly in the fields of bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, and the fight against schistosomiasis.

Importantly, the training and infrastructural upgrade through this project will be showcased in line with the Cameroon National Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2025 on digital sovereignty, to discuss future such initiatives in fostering the implementation of the key pillars of this strategy.
