When Black history is not ignored, it is often disjointed, individualized by a particular teacher, and often reduced to a few sanitized stories about Civil Rights heroes—briefly mentioned and segregated to the month of February, then forgotten for the rest of the year.

To me, this is not education. This is erasure.

Black, Brown, students of color, and White students are harmed when they are not educated on how the African American struggle for justice has benefited every marginalized group in America.

A soldier returns to his homeland. Vienna, Austria (1946)

He stands on cobblestones with a pack on his back and crutches under his arms — one of thousands of men who came home to Vienna in 1946 carrying visible and invisible wounds.

Austria had been annexed into N**i Germany in 1938, and by war’s end an estimated 1.2 million Austrians had served in the German armed forces. Tens of thousands never returned. Vienna itself was heavily bombed; by April 1945, Soviet forces had captured the city after brutal street fighting that left entire districts in ruins.

In 1946, Austria was divided into four Allied occupation zones, American, British, French, and Soviet. with Vienna split the same way, much like Berlin. Food shortages were severe, housing was scarce, and black markets flourished.

For disabled veterans, reintegration was especially difficult. Artificial limbs were basic, and social services were overwhelmed.

Added fact: Austria would remain under Allied occupation until 1955, when the Austrian State Treaty restored full sovereignty and declared the country permanently neutral a , status it maintains to this day.
