📍The Ancient Battlefield of Chibi

Did you know Hubei is the home of many battles from the Three Kingdoms "San Guo" period of Chinese history? For the series we’ll be taking you back in time with stories of the past and different traveling destinations!

Chibi Ancient Battlefield of the Three Kingdoms (220 - 280 AD) is where the Battle of Chibi took place. It is one of a few ancient battlefields still remaining in China. The battle field is along the middle reaches of Yangtze River, about 160 kilometers (100 miles) southwest of Wuhan City in Hubei Province.

In 208AD, Cao Cao led his army of 260,000 soldiers southward and occupied a large territory. He met the allied force of Sun Quan and Liu Bei in what is now Chibi. Although Sun and Liu only had about 40,000 to 50,000 soldiers in total, they defeated Cao. After, the two forces were at a stalemate on two sides of the Yangtze River. Later, the Sun and Liu side came out an idea. They set fire towards Cao’s army. With the help of southeast wind, the Cao’s army was on fire and severely damaged. After the Battle, Cao Cao returned to the north and Sun Quan and Liu Bei both took a part of China to the south of the Yangtze River, laying foundation for the forming of Three Kingdoms, respectively Wei Kingdom of Cao Cao, Wu Kingdom of Sun Quan and Shu Kingdom of Liubei.

Wuhan, aka Riverside City, is home to ethereal mountains and crystal lakes. Yet Yellow Crane Tower is the local tourism’s centerpiece. It has perched atop Snake Mountain for centuries, with white clouds wafting around and the Yangtze River surging below. It sits on the Snake Mountain along the Wuhan section of the Yangtze River in Hubei.

This architectural tour de force dates back earliest to the Three Kingdoms Period. Later on, it went through repeated reconstruction and destruction. In Ming Era and Qing Era, for example, the tower got destructed 7 times and reconstructed/renovated 10 times. As a saying goes, “If the nation prospers, the tower would be prosperous too.”
