Call for Peaceful Engagement and Condemnation of Violence in Eastern Province

The Socialist Party in Eastern Province strongly advises all citizens to refrain from engaging in violent acts, even in times of frustration with government actions. In a democratic nation like Zambia, we have the right to voice our concerns and seek redress through peaceful means.

As the Socialist Party, we urge our members and all Zambians to utilize the appropriate channels to express their grievances when they feel overlooked or mistreated by the government. The recent incidents in Chiwempala, Copperbelt, should not be celebrated or endorsed by any Zambian, regardless of political affiliation.

If citizens believe that the government is not fulfilling its responsibilities, the appropriate response is to exercise their democratic right to vote, rather than resorting to violence that undermines the strong legacy of peace, love, and unity left by our founding fathers.

The events in Chiwempala have the potential to disrupt our hard-won peace, and no one would wish for such turmoil, especially those who aspire to lead our nation. Therefore, we must collectively condemn violence in all its forms.

Let us work together to uphold the values of democracy and peace in Zambia.

RESOLVE LEADERSHIP RECORDS TO STRENGTHEN TONSE ALLIANCE, KAUNDA URGES PF

Lusaka... Thursday September 11, 2025 – Socialist Party (SP) National Youth Chairperson Kelvin Kaunda has urged the Patriotic Front (PF) to resolve its leadership disputes in order to strengthen the Tonse Alliance.

Speaking on Crown TV in Lusaka, Mr. Kaunda said the Tonse Alliance constitution stipulates that the PF President automatically becomes the Alliance's presidential candidate.

However, he explained that current records at the Registrar of Societies recognize Robert Chabinga as PF President, a situation that complicates the SP's collaboration.

“This is something that we are managing very cautiously. If you are able to look at things from where we stand today, the only eligible presidential candidate under Tonse Alliance is Robert Chabinga. The Tonse Alliance constitution says the PF President shall be the presidential candidate for Alliance. And if you are to follow, forget about the manipulation around, we all know that the UPND has had a hand in the manipulation of the changing of the PF leadership. In terms of records, when you go to the Registrar of Societies today, the one who is being recognized as PF President is Chabinga yet we have the acting PF President on the other hand,” he said.

“If you had an opportunity to read the Tonse Alliance constitution, it clearly states that the leader of the PF shall automatically become the presidential candidate for the Tonse Alliance. But the question is, must we hasten the process of being part of an Alliance which is going to peach up a leader we do not agree with as a party? So there are a lot of issues that must be resolved.”

Mr. Kaunda said his party is not against any collaboration with other political parties but that there must be clear terms and conditions before any collaboration.

He stressed that the SP cannot support a leader it does not recognize, and therefore, PF must put its house in order before any meaningful coalition-building can take place.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kaunda cautioned the ruling UPND against celebrating victories in recent by-elections, noting that by-elections typically favor ruling parties.

He pointed out that the PF also won by-elections prior to the 2021 general elections, yet went on to lose the national vote.

Press Release

We told our Citizens that we shall review about our intelligence report and full detailed information as to Why we did not participate in Mtilizi by-elections.
As responsible citizens, it is our duty to exercise our right to vote and participate in democratic processes. However, in the recent by-elections, we made the difficult decision of not participating in the voting process. This decision was based on our foresight of potential violence and the risk we faced as targets.
Our intelligence reports had indicated that Mtilizi by-elections were likely to be marred by violence. The tense political climate and heated campaigning had already led to several incidents of violence in the past. As concerned citizens, we did not want to put ourselves in harm's way by participating in a process that could potentially turn violent.
Furthermore, we also received information that certain groups with vested interests were planning to target individuals and groups who were perceived as supporters of Socialist party. We feared for our safety and well-being. It was a difficult decision, but we did not want to risk our lives by participating in a process that could potentially cause harm.
Moreover, the recent history of violence in our country's elections has left us with a sense of fear and insecurity. We did not want to be caught up in the chaos and tension that often accompanies such events. Our primary concern was our own safety and that of our families, and we did not want to take any chances.
In addition to our own safety, we were also concerned about the impact of the violence on our community and the country as a whole. We did not want to contribute to the perpetuation of violence and division in our society. By abstaining from the voting process, we hoped to send a message that we reject violence and believe in peaceful and fair elections.
Our decision to not participate in the by-elections was based on our concern for our safety and the potential for violence. As citizens, it is our duty to participate in the democratic process, but in certain circumstances, such as this, we must prioritize our safety and well-being. As a party we have taken serious measures to ensure peaceful and fair elections, so that all citizens can exercise their right to vote without fear.
In conclusion I want to assure our party members in the province that we have put in place enough security and we shall be taking part in future self-created by-elections.

MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCE ON THE PASSING OF MS. EDITH NAWAKWI

It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that I have learned of the untimely passing of Ms. Edith Zewelani Nawakwi, President of the Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD).

My sincere sympathy to her family and friends.

We are all saddened at the loss of this good woman, whose ideals and accomplishments we have long respected. She was a wise and valiant leader.

Ms. Nawakwi was a trailblazer in Zambian politics—a courageous and determined leader who broke barriers and inspired many, particularly women, to take their rightful place in our nation’s political life.

Though sometimes we stood on different sides of the political aisle, I held her in great respect for her intelligence, convictions, her resilience, and her enduring commitment to the development and democratic progress of our country.

Ms. Nawakwi’s contribution to Zambia's political landscape, particularly as the first woman to serve as Minister of Finance, will remain part of our national history.

On behalf of the Socialist Party and on my own behalf, I wish to extend our sincere condolences to her family, the FDD, and all those who held her in high esteem.

May her soul rest in eternal peace, and may her family find strength and comfort during this difficult time.

Fred M’membe
