More than 500 bird species call Sarapiquí home, making it one of Costa Rica’s premier birdwatching destinations.

Among them are two of the rainforest’s most charismatic residents: the magnificent Yellow-throated Toucan and the colorful Collared Aracari, both captured here in their natural habitat.

What if one of the most beautiful gardens at El Lugar had a purpose beyond its beauty?

Within the property sits a natural wastewater treatment system, a dedicated area where specific plants do the work that chemicals and machinery usually would. Their roots filter and purify the water, which is then returned safely to the river, clean and uncontaminated. No electricity. No chemical treatments. Backed by environmental studies.

As part of the biological corridor connected to Braulio Carrillo National Park, this landscape provides a sanctuary for countless species of birds, mammals, and wildlife.

Some guests spot wildlife from their terrace. Others find it on a trail. Most simply let it come to them.
